that no problem is on the tape?”Nothing is ever 100% sure, especially when it comes to video cameras. The “use cleaning cassette” appears when the sensor detects a problem, but foreign material on the recording head can occur at any time. You can minimize the frequency of tape glitches and dropouts by ocassionally fast forwarding and rewinding a new tape before use. This will accomplish 2 things:
– it will help to throw out any microscopic bits of debris that may get caught in the grooves of the recording head.
– it will pre-tention the new tape against the recording head so it runs smoothly across it.Always use the same brand of tape, and if you change brands get the tape transport cleaned by a professional before you switch to the new tape. Some tape companies use a dry lubricant while some use a wet lubricant and mixing the two types will invite problems.

Yes, it’s true. Keep your video files under the 4 gig limit and you should be fine for transfering between platforms.
You can also get a program for a Windows machine that will read and write to a Mac OS Extended hard drive called MacDrive. All you have to do is convince your Windows clients to buy and install the program.

Sorry for the delay in my reply. Have been out all day.
First, try deleting all your audio render files because if the glitches happen in the same spots each time then it’s most likely a file corruption. Deleting the audio render files will be the fastest way to find out if that’s what the problem is. FCP will simply re-render the files again. If you want to go all the way then you could also delete the video render files at the same time. It may take a bit of time for FCP to re-render those files too, but then you’ll know that at least the render files are not the culprit anymore. If you’re still having problems then it has to be either a corrupt video or audio source file. You may end up having to delete a problem source file with a new file from your video/audio source media tapes, etc.
While you’re trying to figure it all out keep in mind that problems that occur in the same spot every time are almost always because of a file corruption somewhere.

Graeme Nattress makes a “day for night” effects plugin for Final Cut Pro that looks pretty good. It’s part of his Film Effects Plugin Pack v.2.0. No it’s not expensive and there are video samples at his website.

A really fast way to create a vignette would be to create an edge feather on your clip. If that’s what you want, then double click your clip to load it into the viewer. Click the viewer motion tab and click the crop disclosure triangle. Adjust the edge feather to taste.

If you’ve set in and out points for log and capture it should work properly without having to hit escape before the capture is actually complete. Since you’re on a tight schedule I’d suggest you do whatever it takes to get a completed clip captured with the right length of audio.
Afterwards you could try to trash the FCP pref files and restart the program. They may have become corrupt and thus is affecting the way the capture process is working at the moment. Also make sure your capture preset is mirroring what you’ve actually got on your source tape i.e. DV NTSC 48kHz.

Deselect the audio/video to be seperate during capture. Also make sure your audio is being captured to the same folder as the video on your media drive. There is a choice in this regard, and capturing the video and audio to different folders or media drives invites problems.
