My GL2 is 3 years old now. 6 months ago i have a message: use cleaning
cassette. I buy one, and use once. Since then the message never
happened. Luckly i never seen any dropout.
This year i make 8 wedding videos, so i want to play a sure game.
I dont want a head error, a dropout. I always use NEW Tdk tapes.
My gl2 is now in the service because the tape rewind error. They
change the tape transport mechanism. I asked the guy: can you test the
head too? He said the head is in normal condition, not needed to change is.
My question is: have somebody’s head changed yet? If yes, how old was
the cam? Or how much workhour do you use it?

If the “use cleaning cassette” message doesn’t appear, is 100% sure
that no problem is on the tape?
And when this msg appear, i have some workhour before the first
dropout appear? It will be good.

    thank you
    Marton

[Marton] “f the “use cleaning cassette” message doesn’t appear, is 100% sure
that no problem is on the tape?”

Nothing is ever 100% sure, especially when it comes to video cameras. The “use cleaning cassette” appears when the sensor detects a problem, but foreign material on the recording head can occur at any time. You can minimize the frequency of tape glitches and dropouts by ocassionally fast forwarding and rewinding a new tape before use. This will accomplish 2 things:

    – it will help to throw out any microscopic bits of debris that may get caught in the grooves of the recording head.
    – it will pre-tention the new tape against the recording head so it runs smoothly across it.

Always use the same brand of tape, and if you change brands get the tape transport cleaned by a professional before you switch to the new tape. Some tape companies use a dry lubricant while some use a wet lubricant and mixing the two types will invite problems.

    – Don

    Thank you.
OK, i will forwarding and rewinding every new tape.
But not with my GL2, instead with a cheap minidv cam.
I always use tdk tapes. If i become a tape with another brand
to make a dvd, i dont want to play it with my gl2.
