Ah yes, the old “Have-you-tried-turning-it-off-and-on-again” trick. ☺

Try doing a RESET ALL from the special menu. I had an audio issue some years back on my EX3 and resetting did the trick. The EX1R is basically the same camera. I have one of those as well.

    John,
I appreciate the the fact that you are helping me brainstorm. The external G-Raid is HFS+ and I always start the externals before starting the computer. As I mentioned previously, it shows up fine on my 2012 Mac Pro running Sierra as does everything else. My next task will be to drag the Mac Pro into the light and try re-seating the SATA PCI card. I even went into preferences and made sure that all external drives show up on the desktop. Again, thank you very much for your efforts to help. The sleuthing continues….

Update: I just used an external FireWire drive with OS 10.7.5 Lion to restart the Mac Pro and the G-Raid SATA disk showed up on the desktop right away. So, the drive shows up with OS 10.7.5 but not with OS 10.6.8. Weird. Originally, when the computer was running 10.6.8 there was no issue.

[Sylvie Collier] “Since then it’s been intermittent , sometimes works ok, other tests produce no signal.”

Try going to the ‘OTHERS’ menu and select ‘RESET ALL’. Sometimes all the EX1R needs is to return the camera to its default settings. If you have any custom presets such as different colour settings you might want to back them up to a spare SxS card first as they will be erased during the reset process.

I had a low buzz in one of the audio channels once and resetting the camera cured it.

August 8, 2016 at 10:09 pm in reply to: used SXS Cards

The SXS-1 cards are good for 10,000 cycles and the SXS cards are good for 100,000. I don’t know what the differences are with the SXS Pro cards. The link below is a bit dated but it still has some pertinent information. This link will be vapourware by the middle of September.

  • The H.264 footage from your GoPro is an acquisition codec, not an editing codec and FCP wasn’t made to work with it. If you drop it into a timeline it may playback okay until you make some edits then you may experience picture artifacts, sync issues and also playback stuttering etc. If you had FCP7 I would recommend transcoding everything including the XDCAM EX footage to ProRes using Compressor but I don’t think FCP6 came with it.

Your best bet is to convert the GoPro footage to the XDCAM EX codec, create an XDCAM EX timeline in FCP6 and import your footage. If you have Final Cut Studio you should also have Compressor.

July 8, 2015 at 6:58 pm in reply to: Sony EX3 files and Final Cut Pro 7

[Lucy Mal] “does it matter that my film is shot progressive?”

If you have a look in the Sequence Settings window and activate the drop down menu for aspect ratio you’ll see that there is no progressive setting for 1080. Since your field dominance setting is already set to ‘None’ that tells FCP that your sequence is progressive. The setting of HDTV 1080i (16:9) is appropriate.

Remember that once your sequence is set up you’ll be able to review all its features in FCP’s Browser window, where all the clips go. Make sure the Compressor column says Apple Pro Res 422, the Vid rate is 25 and the Pixel Aspect is Square.

    Cheers,

[Lucy Mal] ” in easy set up do I choose Apple pro res 422 option? In the box below it you can choose between custom set up and and HDV 1080p24 – would i choose custom set up as i shot my film on 25p?”

In Easy Setup beside format mine is using the HD setting and you should set your rate to 25 fps. Custom Setup is used as well. Underneath all that in small print is the list for the sequence presets. With mine the first one says Sequence Preset: Apple ProRes 422 1920×1080 30p 48kHz. Yours should be the same other than the time base changed to 25:00 fps.

[Lucy Mal] “Are there any settings within log and transfer menus that I need to amend?”

Not as far as I know. Basically the plugin works the same way as the stand alone program Sony XDCAM Transfer which is what I use. They both import the EX clips and transcode them to Quicktime .mov files. Unfortunately you cannot transcode to ProRes on import. You can preview clips and import portions of clips with XDCAM Transfer but that’s about all the program is designed to do. With the Log and Transfer plugin you want to bring the files into FCP without altering them, set them up in bins etc.
