  • Anyone else getting stalled FCP startup with an external drive?

I’ve had this annoying little problem whenever I have a particular Lacie Drive connected. Although I am sure it only happens when one of two of my Lacie 500’s is connected, I am not sure if it is the file system, software, hardware or what. I’ve pretty much done all of the normal things twice, e.g. preference trashing, disk warrior, permissions etc. I also noticed that the problem had some relief when I removed an mpeg2 component, but basically this things got me stumped. So, I’m looking for more clues from anyone who may be experiencing a similar problem as follows”

When starting FCP, right after I hit “Continue” when no camera is found, it rattles subject drive and hangs for about 3 minutes, then opens.

First of all, you should not be editing w/o a deck/cam attached (unless yer in the Cafe or on a plane). How else can you monitor audio and video correctly?

Secondly, you have to be very careful with FireWire drives. The first question I would ask is: is the problematic HD initialized with Mac OS Extended? Check this in Disk Utility.

Yes, Mac OS Extended, and I use a broadcast monitor for editing.

Finally nailed down the problem. It was in a file called: “Final Cut Pro Thumbnail Data” that appeared to be corrupted. This evidently caused the startup process to get lost (in my case looking for something that didn’t exist on an external firewire drive), and hang for a few minutes before opening.

This took a couple of days to find, hopefully others will find this information helpful.

Very helpful indeed. Thanks for posting back with your findings.
