you would use a decklink card to capture to get digibeta into your computer and it would be 4:2:2 ( data rate approx 20MB/s) ..
or you find a production/post house that uses decklink and have them capture and print back to digibeta = you take them the finished edit ( rendered using BM codec or if they have vegas then you could use sony YUV codec) on a 1394 external drive..what’s with EDL = they are 20+years old and very limited in what you can do between different apps – however using same app you can do alot more ( IE: avid to avid vs. avid to FCP ) .. avid came out with a much more robust EDL thing they call AAF ..V6 can use/create AAF .. you should look up the AAF spec’s as not every thing you do in one app is exportable to another app … keep effects to a min , compositing to min ..

vegas does work with decklink and as you must know it doesn’t use all the features .. so it could be all the new updates would have affect on the features that Vegas does use in decklink ?

i see LCD’s & Plasma at many post houses for clients to view project etc and those LARGE screens do look impressive in all the rooms ( even waiting room ) ..
however when it comes time to color grading i have NEVER anybody use a LCD or plasma screen … -

DVCpro 50 = 6.8 MB/s
DVCpro 720p = 6.8 MB/s
DVCpro 1080 = 13.7 MB/s -
Vegas can handle HD /SD from any deck/camera that has SDI out ( that would include DVCpro & whatever provided you have a card-ie: decklink) ..
but will it handle DVCpro 50 native over 1394 ?? Vegas has always been OPEN so i really think it comes down to how many request they get for DVCpro 50/100 support AND how much $$$ panasonic wants in fees ..
also there could be 3rd pary solutions ?don’t let panasonic have you believe that anybody can use their codec’s in products or make P2 cards .. DVCpro has been around for years and how many 3rd party do you see selling a DVCpro codec ?? and the few that do look at the price (300-500) …
let’s not forget the bottom line the DVCpro50 codec is just as compressed as any DV codec ( DV= 3.4MB/s, DVCpro50=6.8MB/s, DVCproHD 720p= 6.8MB/s, DVCpro1080= 13.7MB/s ) .. DVCpro 50 works very good on the camera head but NOT that good after a few renderings = shoot with confidence – render with caution = IMO for better results in post use a intermediate codec
P2 – been around since the 800 camera ? how many 3rd party’s are making P2’s = ZERO ..

i’ve had couple 1394 external drives go off line = somewhere down the line the 1394 pinn quit working ( usb2 still worked) ..
i have some some 80 gig maxtors that go to sleep and then can’t be awaken ??
i have found with my several pull out trays bad connections when they go off line – i shove them in a little harder ..
a friend found that if he changed the drives DMA 6 to DMA 5 it fixed his write errors and off line thing (maxtor drives) …

the 18 min ? that seems like your hard drive is formatted FAT 32 which has a 4gig max file… mpeg 2 files are smaller
the manual control PRINT to tape ..
if you don’t have allot of color correction and other effects you could print from TL (tools – print to DV tape- you can then set how many seconds of color bars , black etc) .. if it tells you to use manual controls – you have your camera in VCR mode .. Vegas will give you a visual 10-0 count down – somewhere around ? 6 ? 5? ( depends on how long you think it takes for your camera to go into record mode or if you added 5-10 seconds of black you can wait till zero ) you put camera into record mode ( click record/play ? depends on camera) ..BUT 1st Vegas must render the sections of your project that has transitions, effects etc = could take 5 , 10, 20 min ?? … once finished rendering it will start the count down …
