Hardrive goes offline
Posted by Thomas Quinn on October 28, 2005 at 3:19 pmI am using Vegas 6 on a new computer I got 5-6 weeks ago over the last few days in the middle of a project the hardrive seems to dissapear from the computer( I USE SEVERAL HARDRIVES CONNECTED VIA A SLIDE IN & OUT CADDY) a restart usually cures the problem. but this is a pain when it happens in the middle of a render anyone had this. is it the computer or Vegas (by the way the computer is a 4800 Dual core MESH.

October 28, 2005 at 6:14 pmMy money’s on the computer too, especially if they all work on your old computer. And you mentioned reboot – but can we assume un/re-plugging the cable also bring them back online? Running a Device Manager scan?
This isn’t just a minor annoyance that can be waved off with a reboot; if they drop offline at the right moment the whole drive will come unformatted, making any data on it effectively lost (without a lot of recovery hassle).
One option – as opposed to the hassle of returning the computer – may be to install a 1394/usb2 card. Cheap enough to try.

How would you turn off Write caching on a drive? I have 2 external Maxtor 1-touch personal storage connected via 1394 and am having the same problem. I tried replacing the firewire cables but it didn’t solve the problem. I’m thinking the HD is starting to go.

Device Manager>Disks>properties>policy. But I think removable drives in WinXP have it turned off by default. This wouldn’t solve the problem anyway as the drive could still disconnect in the middle of a write. If you suspect drive failure (different than sudden external drive disconnects), run a SMART check. I use SMART Disk Monitor from Santools, but it won’t test the disk over 1394.

October 29, 2005 at 8:16 pmi’ve had couple 1394 external drives go off line = somewhere down the line the 1394 pinn quit working ( usb2 still worked) ..
i have some some 80 gig maxtors that go to sleep and then can’t be awaken ??
i have found with my several pull out trays bad connections when they go off line – i shove them in a little harder ..
a friend found that if he changed the drives DMA 6 to DMA 5 it fixed his write errors and off line thing (maxtor drives) …

November 1, 2005 at 1:19 pmsame problem here, also with the maxtor one touch storage as firewiredrive. Often the drive disappears after the camcorder (on another firewireport) is switched on or off, apparently it is not safe to turn these firewiredevices on or off with computer running: Usually the external drive recovers after reboot, but I allready had to format the drive once because bootsectors became damaged.
I would also like to know if changing DMA mode helps, and how to do that.
