Speaking of free software check out Gaea

    https://quadspinner.com/Gaea#home

It generates landscapes, which you can then get into blender and create a file you can open an utilize in hitfilm. 3 free programs working in tandem. I’m still trash with 3D models but I want to utilize this for background elements in compositions.

Maybe it’s some weirdness happening from gpu acceleration. There are a lot of layers and or fx that can cause it, you could try turning it off and see if it still happens.

Cannot seem to reproduce. I thought maybe your fx bypass might be switched on but you can makes changes and see it just not by dragging the cross hairs.

    Found this in the manual

Select the Automatically overlap multiple selected media when added check box on the Editing tab of the Preferences dialog if you want to overlap events when you add them to the same track. Automatic Crossfades must be turned on to use this feature. For more information, see Preferences – Editing Tab and Automatic crossfades

I wonder if there is a good way for this to work

There may be a way to do what you want. There is a small arrow at the bottom left of the clip called the snap offset. You can drag it to the right then when moving the clip the snap point will be where ever you drag the arrow. If there is perhaps a setting that can be adjust to have the snap offset start further in. I think there is a command that eliminates gaps between clips, I forget how you do it but I know that at least exists. Perhaps it would much everything to the snap offset points and in that would do it.

Another way that doesn’t really achieve the goal is to highlight all the clips with the select tool, then you can at least adjust the fade in and out on all of them at once. They would still have transition effects but it would fade to black for a second before coming back.

  • For the anchor point issue I have a work around. I know this will work for legacy text for sure. But if you are trying to animate a typing effect it would be easier with the pro type titler which doesn’t have the anchor point issue.

But for legacy text, type something then go into placement and selection something that has left or right in it, probably left would be better. Now go into pan crop and move the text where you actually want it. Now you should be able to type and it wont move around in an annoying manner.

Try setting up your project in a 4:3 aspect ratio then put the video on the timeline, open it in pan crop, right click and select match output aspect.
