  • Instead of using the in-program renderer in AE, use Adobe Media Encoder. It will save a temporary version of your comp so that you can keep working and make changes as it renders it out.

Select the times you want, and press CNTRL (OrCMD) +ALT+M and that will open encoder and automatically put it in the render que. Then just adjust the settings you want. I do this on a daily basis. This is, of course, assuming you are using Creative Cloud and not CS6 or below.

  • That particular effect is practical. Video feedback is created by recording your subject in front of a display that is displaying the camera feed. Tilt the screen or camera to get those neat into infinite images. There are a few days you might be able to go about recreating something similar. If your subject is on a Hendren, key then out and make multiple copies and then Keane each copied position and rotation to be a degree off. You can also try using the echo effect. But really the best way to do it is in camera in my opinion.

  • 24fps is pretty bad for fast pans. I understand that you are likely trying to match footage frame rates but i would suggest higher frame rates for a better result. Don’t forget to turn on motion blur to help smooth those movements. You can also smooth out the motion blur even more in the comp advanced settings.

Hope that solves your issue, if not, upload a sample so we can see it.

  • Have you tried the classic “Collapse 3d” button on your modes/switches for the precomps?

Its the same as the continually rasterize button when working with vector graphics. That should give you back control of precomped elements in utilizing 3D with cameras and lights while keeping them separated.

Hey Moog, I don’t know your level of comfort with adobe products, so I may be saying things you’ve already tried.

    1) Check that if you are importing via dynamic link that the audio and video are linked together. I know I’ll occasionally unlink them for various reasons, just remember to put them back.
    2) Instead of opening a dynamic link, have you tried just selecting, copying, and then pasting into after effects? It’s not the best way, but it works. If that is the way you have been doing it, have you tried a dynamic link or straight up import of the same raw footage into after effects?
    3) in AE have you twirled down enough on your video clip to see the waveform? It isn’t like Premiere where you see it right out of the gate, you have to open several layers before it is there.
    4) how are you checking sound? If you are just hitting space bar for a quick preview, it likely won’t play any sound at all. Try hitting “0” on the number pad for a RAM preview, or hitting the decimal button on the number pad for an audio preview.
    5) Make sure that audio is enabled in your RAM preview panel.
    6) Clean your disk cache to see if that was causing issues.

    Hope that helps.

Press y on your keyboard for the pan behind tool, click an hold the anchor point, then hold control or command which will snap the anchor point as you move it around. Snap it to the center. If it is already centered, then your circle wasn’t perfect. To get a perfect circle, hold shift while you click and drag the eclipse tool to the appropriate size.

  • The reason it messes up I’d within the expression of writes. Two troubleshoots is to either key frame position 2 in the middle of 1 and 3 and perhaps shorten the transition, or the better option, list the targets multiple times in the order you would want to see them and just key frame straight up. If that doesn’t do it for you make multiple null objects and place them in the center of the targets. Any of those should work.

April 10, 2015 at 3:58 pm in reply to: How are the army clones in this effect achieved?

You can also use a particle emitter like trapcode’s particular and use a video clip as the particle. You should be able to offset the time on it too if you want it to look like an army vs a repeated image.

You can adjust the aspect ration by going to your project panel, right clicking your comp, and then choosing comp settings. There you can unlink your pixel counts, change them to your liking, or go a step further and just type in a new ratio. Select accept when done, and it will change. If you have other comps or precomps, you will need to repeat the process to get the ratio for all of them.

  • Well the main problem I see is that when you try to key, you end up keying out colors from the background that are naturally on the talent, (given why green screen and blue screens are so effective). In my opinion, mocha’s planar tracker is the way to go with this; it can just be a pain because you have to create multiple track mattes for one body. But the majority of the work would be fairly automated and you should only be to do minimal key frames. In the future of you have control over it,I highly suggest shooting on solid wall (preferably green or at least whatever is not on the talent) you will then get a much stronger key. I’ll look around to see if I can find settings that might help. Can you upload a sample of the video? I’ll see what I can come up with
