one way to do it is to make your text in Illustrator making each name a separate layer, then bring in the vector file to AE. Bring it into your comp, right click, and make shape layers from vector layer. Then create keyframes on the paths of each shape layer created, and copy and paste keyframes of the ending letters into the starting ones. Then keyframe your position easy, copy and paste that on each shape layer, staggering it.

Its not quick, but you can get there this way.

If you make each layer its own layer in the Illustrator file, you can then copy the position keyframes and paste it over each layer, then use the layer sequencer to stagger the layers. If I’m not clear I can maybe come up with a quick example or something.

try cleaning out your disk / memory caches and export it to a separate Hard Drive than the one the file is saved too. Sometimes that works for me.

If you have an SSD in there, try saving it to that.

its a simple rotation. Make sure your layer is a 3D layer, and set the anchor point to along its edge, then with the layer selected hit “r” for the rotation properties, and animated the rotation on the Y axis, and as it rotates out, push back in Z space and move to the right or left on the x axis.

  • Make your shape layers the size you need, and position them where you want them at the end, parent their position properties with their cut outs. Then make a shape layer the reverse of the bottom portion of your cutout and make that an alpha matte to your inner shape layer.

May 31, 2015 at 12:35 am in reply to: Animating 3D Character

Well part of the issue is that after effects is not natively a 3d program, it is 2.5d. So in order to really animate a 3d character you need to have a 3d emulator like element 3d. If you use element, you should be able to set null objects for each limb, but I don’t think it will be nearly as intuitive than animating it in an actual 3d application.

You maybe out of luck, but do you have a screen shot of the footage of a quick clip? I may be able to come up with a solution.

  • You are basically looking for a form of motion tracking. Planar with mocha is probably the best bet. There are a lot of tutorials online for that or the other types.

May 20, 2015 at 1:27 pm in reply to: Motion Tracking a Bubble.

The reason you aren’t getting a quality result is because the after effects motion tracker users high contrast luma/color information to maintain a point. There just isn’t enough contrast between the bubble and the background to provide a point for the tracker to track. What’s more, the contrast points that are there are from the lighting in the environment, which will change on the bubble as it moves around. You’re best bet is to use a planar tracker in mocha or to track it by hand.

May 18, 2015 at 1:45 am in reply to: Continuously Rasterized layers disappearing

Make sure the anchor point is in the center of your object. Also, hitting the continuously rasterize function on a precomp is actually collapse 3d which allows the 3d information from inside the precomp to be affected by a 3d camera.

If you can show me a few screen shots of your work flow I may be able to help you find your problem.

  • The process for this would be a lot like cel animation.

Here is kind of a makeshift tutorial on how this could be done using after effects and C4D.
