Just a silly aside, but I noticed that in this thread and the one directly preceding it, Mike and Tim had separate questions and each supplied the answer for the other. You just gotta love the COW!

The io-HD is pretty compact Ed, at 8.2″x12″x4.8″, and I’ve seen advertised prices down close to 3000. Of course it’s easy to advertise something not available yet at a low price, we’ll see what happens when it’s out. Oh wait, the release date was day before yesterday! 😉

[yehuda] “Firewire port and cable are fine. Using OS 10.4.10, Upgraded not long ago from Mac Software Update.”
You’ve tested them SINCE you started having this problem?
Have you used the IO successfully since your OS upgrade?
You might want to give AJA support a call, They are very helpful, and very good.

Any changes made recently, OS, Drivers, Quicktime, etc?
Can you test the Firewire port on your computer with a deck or camera? Likewise the Firewire cable you’re using.

My Dell 2407 is almost three years old and it’s working fine, has a beautiful picture and as Shane said, lots of inputs that make it really useful. Do a COW search on the Dell and you’ll find many many posts by satisfied owners. I’d forget about the Gateway.

You might take a look at CatDV Pro from Squarebox Software. It would give you the database power you need and allow for small preview files of the footage so your editors could take a look before accessing the originals.

[Jordi J Recort] “The old Io boxes was able to do DVCPROHD navively…”
I thought the original IO was standard definition only. Where did you get that information?

[Peacejames] “So just to confirm, we are not limited to the Apple Pro-Res codec out of this box. We can hook up a nice HD-SDI camera input, and send DVCproHD to the laptop through the firewire?”
Well, Bob is a LOT more knowledgeable than I in this area, but the response I got to this very question last week from AJA Sales was…… “we think so, but that’s not been tested yet”. It’s my understanding that the box will pass HD through FW800 as Pro Res, and the laptop would need to transcode that to DVCproHD on the fly.
If that’s not the case, I’m sure I’ll be corrected in short order 🙂
MOTU’s V3HD box will do a hardware conversion from HD-SDI to DVCproHD and send it out via Firewire, but there is no release date so far for that product.

Try doing a search for youtube in the COW forums and you’ll find hundreds of posts about this.

I don’t think you can make multiclips with different codecs in FCP 5. Mixing different formats in a timeline is new in FCP 6. Maybe someone who is using that version can speak to whether it accepts different formats within a multiclip.
