[Shane Ross] “You want a good eSATA drive for this.”

    Shane,

I love my eSATA boxes for their speed, but frankly, I hate the connectors and the cables, which are so stiff. When I use my two bay Firmtek box with my Powerbook, I’m always afraid the stiff cables will pull out if the laptop gets moved a bit. Have you found any eSATA cables that are more flexible?

    Thanks,

[jon smitherton] “Maybe or maybe not depending if you’re christian or not.”

I think it depends on other criteria as this former Jew, now agnostic, doesn’t find the image offensive at all (except for the color balance, which is the point, after all.)

One thing I do find offensive is my inability to grasp many software concepts easily, so thank you Walter for your informative explanation of this topic.

I think there are a great many things to be offended and outraged by in today’s world. Important things, especially in my country (the U.S.A.) Sorry Jon, but I really don’t see this as one of them.

    [gary adcock]
if you are talking about trying to handle HD content in REALTIME in a truck, that is not something I would ever do with a laptop. I could not take the screaming from the TD about when the shot was going to be ready.”

I hear that! I get screamed at enough already. This isn’t for playback during a show, it’s for shot scripting and camera meetings later on. So yes, I am talking about recording in real time, but no need to play back under live show pressure.

    Shane:
That Motu V3HD looks way cool! I’ve sent them a request for pricing and availability. Thanks for the information!

[gary adcock] “That does not mean that 3rd parties like AJA have not stepped in to fill that void.”

    Gary,

Are there solutions other than the io-HD that would allow a laptop to record DVC-Pro HD from a HD source? I’d like to be able to record footage during a HD truck shoot. They can supply me with HD-SDI feeds, and I need to record three of them. Three towers with HD-SDI cards just isn’t feasible. Not enough room in the truck, and not enough money in the budget.

    Thanks,
    David

Another easy way is the DH-Box filter from Digital Heaven. $20 U.S.

There’s a video on their site that shows what it can do, and how easily it’s done.

[Shane Ross] “ig fan of the Dell 2405 (now 2407) monitors.”

I agree with Shane and suggest two Dell 24″ monitors. I love mine. The extra video inputs are handy too. You can hook them up as extra tape machine or DVD burner monitors or whatever, and switch to the different feeds at the touch of the front panel selector buttons.

    Enjoy your new system!

I don’t see anything that I would call “noise” either. I am curious as to why there are jagged edges that look like interlacing artifacts if this was shot in a progressive mode. Can someone explain that?

    Lars,

How do you like the image on this monitor? How is it for off access viewing? It looks interesting and I see it for as little as $725 on the web. I guess they can sell it at this price point by cutting out HD-SDI input. Could be a great little monitor for use with a camera that has analog outputs, but I’d need a digital/analog converter for use on many shoots where only HD-SDI is available.

It’s amazingly simple to find answers to these kinds of questions. A simple Google search for “OSX journaling” returns, as the very first hit, this link to the Apple website:

    https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107249

    Which states:

“When you enable journaling on a disk, a continuous record of changes to files on the disk is maintained in the journal. If your computer stops because of a power failure or some other issue, the journal is used to restore the disk to a known-good state when the server restarts.

“With journaling turned on, the file system logs transactions as they occur….”

So, you can see how useful journaling can be, and also why it would slow down performance of a drive as your system tries to log each and every change made to every file on that drive.

    Handy tool, that internet search.
