  • How do I set up a split screen?

Posted by Sam Mallery on June 21, 2007 at 4:21 pm

    Hi-

I’m making a video and I want to show two separte clips of video at the same time, split down the middle of the screen. I’m pretty comfortable with most of the controls in FCP, but I don’t know who to set this up.

I’m using Final Cut Pro 4.5

    Thanks,
    Sam

Layer the clips on top of each other. Double Click them to load them into the Viewer and click on the MOTION tab…play with SCALE and CROP functions.

So I layer them on top of one another in the Viewer itself? If I drag both clips into the Viewer, one after another, will this work? Do you mean double click them when they are in the browser?

I never have much luck when I experiment with the Motion stuff. It’s probably the least intuitive part of FCP.

    Thanks for the tips!

Layer them in the timeline. One on V1, the other on V2. Then double-click on the clip in V2 to load it into the Viewer, and then crop and scale. Then do the same with the clip on V1.

You may find this easier if you have the ‘image+wireframe’ option selected in the drop-down menu on the canvas. If you re-size both clips to 50% scale in the motion tab, and have wireframe selected, you can just drag them to the positions you want. It’s as easy as moving images in Word.

Another easy way is the DH-Box filter from Digital Heaven. $20 U.S.

There’s a video on their site that shows what it can do, and how easily it’s done.

may be a good idea to use the copy and paste attributes feature to get basic settings from one clip to the other and then on the clip that has parameters pasted just change either x or y coordinate

also when resizing clips to 50% on scale you need to use coordinates that are quarter the screen width example top left in PAL is -180, -144

If you are doing a lot of this work your best bet is a motion template with dropzones that you can drag video into

also be aware that video has areas at the side of the image that arent used but appear when you scale the picture
