looking at getting the ATI X1900 graphics card, and also a second computer monitor that could also double as a (preferably HD) program monitor. there is a 24″ Gateway (Gateway FPD2485W 24-inch LCD)for $600. it is 1080p, so i’m curious how smoothly it will show a 1080i clip? i was at the store, and the sales people strangely couldn’t show me any HD clips from their hard drive, so i haven’t really seen it in full use…but from what i can tell it seems like it would serve my purpose.

i think my drawback with getting an HD output/program monitor is that i don’t have an HD capture (I/O) card, but only SD, so it seems the only “HD” pix i can send out would be via the computer-to-monitor cable connection. of course, i also have SD out, which is how i have been currently monitoring.

so my main question: would this monitor be overkill since i don’t have SDI-component out of my capture card? at this point, i’ve been avoiding upgrading the capture card as i’ve been doing XDCam which i can pull in via firewire and i’m mastering elsewhere onto an HDCam tape…and i’m DEFINITELY not going to be buying my own HDCam deck anytime soon (and probably never will).

thanks for helping out a bonehead!

Get the Dell 2407…same price and a MUCH better monitor. So many input options, and it really gives you a great image.

If you use this (or the Gateway) monitor as your second monitor, just hooking it up to the card will be fine. As a preview monitor, the ONLY option you have is to use Digital Cinema Desktop…which will give you a decent image, but by no means a full quality one. The only way to get a REALLY GOOD image on that monitor is via a capture card like the Decklink or AJA ones (the benefit of the Dell is that it has Component inputs for connecting to the capture cards) or via a Matrox MXO. The MXO coupled with an Apple or Dell monitor will get you broadcast quality…but I know you have heard this all before.

And the dell 2407 will get you full raster 1080p as it has a 1920×1200 screen resolution setting.

thanks Shane. sounds like a good idea and a good tip. i’ll definitely keep it in mind.

what about a 1080i clip showing on a 1080p monitor? what will that look like???

thanks for helping out a bonehead!

Fine…like a full motion clip. But when you pause you won’t see the interlacing as FCP sends out one field only when paused. If you use the MXO or AJA, you’ll see the interlacing when paused.

But it will play back and look normal.

    [mortimer heathcliff] “there is a 24″ Gateway (Gateway FPD2485W 24-inch LCD)for $600.”

    Mortimer,

I know nothing about that particular monitor, however, for the record, Gateway is well-known throughout the industry as having the highest number of returns on its monitors of any company in the business. “Rate of return” is a significant indicator of quality as the majority of customers rarely return even marginal products.

thanks David, that is good to know…maybe that’s why CompUSA has it on such a good special right now? : ) maybe i should go ahead and get it with the 2-year replacement warranty and just hope it works great for a day less than 2-years?! : )

or i could go with the Dell like Shane was suggesting…

    thanks guys.

My Dell 2407 is almost three years old and it’s working fine, has a beautiful picture and as Shane said, lots of inputs that make it really useful. Do a COW search on the Dell and you’ll find many many posts by satisfied owners. I’d forget about the Gateway.

    Regards,
    David

I’d go with the Dell… Remember, the monitor you buy will be the one component you will interface with nearly every minute of your day in the edit suite.

thanks again for all your input guys. looks like the Dell has the votes here! also, just heard back from my sales guy at CompUSA and he says if i got the Gateway, i would also need “Spyder” for $214. i dug it up on the web and found out only a litle about it. do i need Spyder if i buy the Dell? (a spyder in the dell, a spyder in the dell, hi ho the derrio a spyder in the dell) ahem…sorry…

and now for something completely different…

thanks for helping out a bonehead!

Dell 2405 was the first model of the 24″ widescreen they released. The 2407 is the later model. Both are good. I have the 2405…two of them.
