I’d run Disk Warrior on the raid and see what it finds. Its very possible that your large HD video file was written in two or more fragments and the raid simply could not make the move from one fragment to another quickly enough to display HD. Disk Warrior will optimize the files on the array and should prevent that from happening.

When buying a digital still camera you’ve probably heard reference to megapixels right? Well 2K is 2 megapixels. Still cameras have an easier job of capturing images because they only have to capture one at a time, while video cams have to capture frames continually, a mush harder task at high resolutions. This is why still cameras go up to 7, 8, and even 11 megapixels, while 2K or 4K is incredibly high for a video camera. The proposed Red camera you keep hearing about supposedly will make use of the CCDs from a still camera, and theoretically capable of 2K and 4K resolutions.

When doing historical documentaries, typically I want our vintage stock footage to be degraded and chewed-up because it makes audiences feel like they’re being taken back in time in a time machine. VHS blown up to 16×9 has that same effect, especially if you colorize it properly or give it a filmlook. Also, you might want to consider shooting it off your monitor with your HDV camera, that gives it a great look too.

Procoder 2 is hands down the very best, but unfortunately its on the PC platform. Maybe when this whole Mactel thing is sorted out that will no longer be an issue.

Try switching the Easy Setup to something else and then switching it back to the the proper one for DVCPro50.

Yikes!!! I really hate hearing of problems like this. The fact that work on a 35mm feature could proceed without proper “science” is a real shame. This is why post production supervisors exist. I hope you don’t get blamed for this.
In any case, your first step is to take several Betacam tapes and their DVCAM dubs to a professional facility that can compare their timecodes side by side with frame accuracy. You simply must do that in order to know what, if any, discrepancy there is between the two sets of tapes. If that reveals a problem at least you will know where it originated. If no discrepancy exists, then you will know your problems exist elsewhere, and you will be able to trace them inside FCP.
