I’m about to start work on a documentary about music that goes back to the early eighties. I’m planing on shooting interviews 720P with the JVC HDV camera (GY-HD100U). The flashback performances are all on VHS tapes that I’ve collected from various artists. My question is will it make a difference whether I capture the VHS footage as Mini DV, Standard Def, or 720P HDV, being that the original VHS tapes are what they are?

    Not much experience here but:
Personally I would consider converting all the VHS to an SD format and not to 720P as I would think the enlargement would make the already VHS look even worse.
And depending on your workflow you might be down converting all you

Thanks for the input Daniel. I know that a year ago I wouldn’t have cared but with the new HD-DVD players coming out this year I would like to keep this project HDV and/or up-rez to HD. It’s just that I hate how standard def looks on HD televisions and I’m finding them more and more in peoples homes. Maybe I’m wrong about this and someone could school me.

    Carlos,

When doing historical documentaries, typically I want our vintage stock footage to be degraded and chewed-up because it makes audiences feel like they’re being taken back in time in a time machine. VHS blown up to 16×9 has that same effect, especially if you colorize it properly or give it a filmlook. Also, you might want to consider shooting it off your monitor with your HDV camera, that gives it a great look too.

I agree with David that shooting you VHS on a monitor is a good idea and its probably the easiest way of dealing with the workflow problem. I have never seen VHS uprez to HD, but it can’t be pretty.
