now that some of the wraps have been lifted from the RedONE camera….who thinks it might be time for a Red Digital Cinema forum out here on the pasture to chew it all over with mr Nattress and Co?

Rob, Kathy? what do you think?

I think it is way too early. There is no actual camera and they are in development still. A lot of the basic things are still in flux.

I would wait a bit IMO.

oops that would of course be Ron and not Rob!!!

agreed it’s still vapourware – but would be nice to have a place to pick the brains of those lucky enough to get to NAB and who have talked with the RED crew…there was a Motion Forum months before the app actually shipped – granted there was a lot more substance to motion than say where RED is currently at.

anyway just a thought – dont want to clogg up this forum with RED questions and discussions

    Paul,

Yes Rob should be Ron, but also, Kathy should be Kathyln. Ron has told us many times that the mother of the moo apparently detests being called Kathy.

My feelings exactly, Dave. Here’s an example:

Back around the ‘turn of the century’ I sold digital still cameras for a major, nationally known camera store. A small company named Imagek spent maybe 2 or 3 years dragging a non-working prototype around to various trade shows. The device would have been quite clever. It would have fit inside most any 35mm SLR (& many point & shoots) without any modifications, & allowed you to shoot 1.2 megapixel digital pictures with it. You could pop it in & out at will. But, alas, it was only a ‘non-working prototype’. By the time they finally had a ‘working’ prototype (which to my knowledge never produced any pictures that anyone outside the company saw), consumer grade 2 megapixel point & shoot digitals were selling in the $200-500 range, which was a lot less than Imagek wanted to sell their mock up for. Can you say ‘out of business’? Sure you can!

the flipside to that of course would be the opportunity to provide thoughts and possible feature requests while the product is still in development…open dialogue with the developers…maybe we would all end up with the camera we want as opposed to most corporate products where they serve it up wether you like it or not….ie we serve our burgers with mayo wether you like it or not – learn to like our mayo!!

I coudn’t agree with Arniepix more. Yes this looks interesting. Yes they have some solid people behind the project. But please, according to Mike at hdforindies.com they got over 100 $1000 deposits on the first day of NAB alone. I’m not saying that the camera won’t materialize, but for all of the hullabaloo, they are not even showing one frame produced on this camera. Are people really that desparate to buy a camera. Do I want to spend $17,500 to be a beta tester. All I gotta say is, boy the pressure is really going to be on these guys to pull this off. As far as a forum goes, that’s crazy.

Considering how secretive people like Apple and Sony are, the RED idea I think is a good one, it gives potential users a chance to feed back and it gives them great word of mouth marketing.

The cynicism is justified based on past experience, but it doesn’t hurt to be optimistic and if ths camera actually materialises then it will be a revolution. I’m prepared to give Mr Jannard the benefit of the doubt!

This is certainly off-topic here at the FCP forum, and, considering the nonexistence of the RED camera, probably off-topic almost anywhere except chat.

I personally would love to shoot with a 35 MM sized chip HD camera before I finally hang up my spurs, and I applaud undaunted innovators, but I wouldn’t bet the farm that RED will do what we hope it will.

Let’s not forget that neither Sony nor Panasonic will be asleep at the wheel over the next couple of product cycles.

Almost anyone can design an ergonomic box with a lens mount and a holder for a chip; the challenges faced to bring it to market are considerable. Getting the image off the chip in a form that is manageable and usable is no mean task. Storage is not the slam-dunk many believe and this is fundamental to success. Work flow must be simple, reliable, and universal.

Finally, let’s not inflate our own importance; we cinematographers represent a tiny segment of the market, so the cost of development, manufacture, and after-sales support must be borne by few customers. That’s why items such as Chrosziel accessories which seem relatively inexpensive to make, cost a great deal, and highly complex devices, such as multi-megapixel still cameras for consumer use, are so cheap.

On the other hand, if Sony, Panasonic, and the others fail to innovate and RED actually produces the dream, I’ll be in line to buy one.

    Good shooting!

    Leo
