Streamclip had real problems with DVDs coming from DVD recorders. I never had a problem with Streamclip when the DVDs are authored. But the last 4 or 5 DVDs coming from clients that use recorders would not work.

I purchased DVDxDV and that program worked on all the ones that Sreamclip didn’t.

Are you editing in the DV codec?

That could be your undoing. Since I shoot on BetaSP I usually edit using the 8bit uncompressed codec. Last year I did a project that was shot on DV. The client looked at the DVD and said, “why are the edges of the buildings in the photos so blocky? They weren’t like that before.”

It was the difference in editing in the DV codec. I created a new sequence using the 8bit uncompressed codec and copied everything into it. And the building edges in the scanned photos looked as crisp as ever.

So if you are editing in DV that could be the problem. And it’s one you sometimes don’t see until you output to MPEG-2 and watch it on your DVD.

I did a whole bunch of compressions for the internet using Sorenson SQUEEZE on the PC at the end of last year. My QT files were 8bit uncompressed, but that shouldn’t make a difference. I had no problem working on the PC with the files I exported from FCP. In fact, I liked the outcome of the WMV files on the PC and Squeeze better than what I was getting from Flip4Mac.

It actually copies and pastes the keyframe that is 1 second BEFORE the clip. That keyframe is not DURING the clip and it copies fine. It’s the keyframe AFTER the clip that doesn’t copy. Strange.

I’m just doing each by hand, not a big deal.

Where are you trying to move it to?

The HD must be formated for MAC Extended or similar. If it is an EXT drive that was formated for Windows/MAC then there is a 5GB limit.

I had this problem copying files until I realized about the Windows limit.

This may not me your problem, but I thought I would post just in case it was.

I print to video utilizing my BlackMagic DeckLink SP card, this sends a component signal to the BetaSP. If you don’t have a card that links FCP to your BetaSP deck directly via software and hardware, try doing it via your regular monitoring outputs.

Make sure you DOWNMIX the audio for your timeline. Make sure everything is rendered on your timeline. And you are playing back at the highest quality.

Take what ever video and audio inputs you have going to your monitor and hook them up to the inputs on your BetaSP. Then just hit play on your timeline and hit Play and Record on the BetaSP machine.

This should work in a pinch until you figure out what your problem is in hooking up through FCP.

I’m not at the office right now, but I used SQUEEZE to take a one minute video and make it into a Windows Media File for sending in emails. I got it down to about 1MB with the client being somewhat happy with the results. 5 minutes is a lot of video. You will have to experiment a little to see what you can live with. Audio quality made a pretty big difference in file size when I did it. To go from sounding “like it was underwater” to the audio being okay added 20 to 30% to the file I made.

Word of warning!!!! If this is for a client, you will spend many hours trying to get something they will be happy with. They’ll have a hard time understanding why you can’t take SD video that is around 1 GB in size and reduce it to 300 KB!!!!!!!

You may be better off with an MPEG-4 file, which I haven’t used. I’m sure someone else will have some words of wisdom for you. If I end up at the office later today, and no one else has responded, I will send you the settings that I used.

I followed other people’s post and added a new HD to the G5. Then I installed the new OS (then did all the upgrades). Then installed FCP 5, and did all the upgrades.

I left the Panther and FCP4.5 on the old HD just in case I ran into any problems with FCP5. I knew I had a system and application that worked, all I had to do is boot to the old HD. Which I still do now and then because I like doing my MPEG-2s through QT which isn’t available in QT-7.

And even though I did the install the recommended way (at least I think I did) I have days when my G5 (OS 10.4.5) shuts down on boot up, and my FCP won’t open. I NEVER had this when running Pather and FCP 4.5.
