  • upgrading panther to tiger and fcp 4.5 to 5

    Hi all,

I know that the best way to do this is doing a clean install after cloning your hard drive to another…but there’s the problem…i don’t have an extra HD with that much space. How else can i do this without running into all kinds of problems? Can i just do a “archive and install” the OS? afther that, what is the best way to install the FCP 5 when i have 4.5 still installed?

    thanks!

You’re simply asking for problems without performing a clean install, especially if you’re gonna keep running FCP. Hard drives are very cheap now, like $100 or less. Isn’t your time more valuable than that???

I followed other people’s post and added a new HD to the G5. Then I installed the new OS (then did all the upgrades). Then installed FCP 5, and did all the upgrades.

I left the Panther and FCP4.5 on the old HD just in case I ran into any problems with FCP5. I knew I had a system and application that worked, all I had to do is boot to the old HD. Which I still do now and then because I like doing my MPEG-2s through QT which isn’t available in QT-7.

And even though I did the install the recommended way (at least I think I did) I have days when my G5 (OS 10.4.5) shuts down on boot up, and my FCP won’t open. I NEVER had this when running Pather and FCP 4.5.

    Good luck,

    David

Try another erase and install. I had to do it 3 times before everything worked properly. I don’t really understand why an install would work the third time and not the first two but It did. I too felt your frustration of leaving a rock solid 4.5 to pay money for an upgrade that dosnt work. All that said, my fcp5.04 system is allmost as solid as 4.5- it just still drops frames all over the place-
    Good Luck- JP

    David,

Your experience has absolutely nothing to do with Tiger. Its a rock solid OS and used with FCP 5 by many, many professionals right here in L.A. I can assure you, if the problems you describe were inherant in the OS or FCP 5 or the combination of the two, much of what you see everyday on TV would not have made it to air.

I’m also guessing that you need to erase your hrad drive and start over.
