side note.
We’re not positive, but it appears that FCP uses the first frame or two to determine alpha settings. Thus, if your first few frames contain no alpha information, the clip will not interpreted correctly.

ALSO, BIG ISSUE: Lots of folks had NO alpha support after they upgraded to FCP5/Tiger/QT7. They had to reinstall FCP and/or QT.

Use Grab to capture and print the window. It’s a stupid workaround.

Do you need Column View or can you use Large Icon View? The Name field is HUGE in icon view.

The only ways I’ve heard that work are an EDL or XML files.
You can build the EDL easily by dropping all of your clips into one timeline and exporting the EDL of the timeline.
Everything goes to hell if you have splits, l-cuts, effects, or speed changes.

Please note: I have no experience with this process, I’ve just been watching such posts for years.

Good workflow suggestion, John. It would have taken me four paragraphs to arrive at essentially the same place.

To the bigger question: Don’t you think this should be an Export Option, built right into the interface? Everyone needs to export alpha channels sooner or alter, don’t they? It’s silly to be forced to figure out the effects must be UNRENDERED before they can exported to Animation codec files. Lame design.

The media files are slightly different and are not directly backwardly compatible.

It would be easier to upgrade the FCP4 machine to FCP5, you are going to cause yourself all kinds of weird grief trying to maintain the incompatible versions of the project.

Or, if you cannot or will not spend the money, recapture all of your media directly to the FCP4 machine, do the work and bring the project back to the FCP5 machine.

Your sequence is set for HD so it must render DV to run inside the HD environment.

Losing red doesn’t necessarily mean your card has gone bad, how have you arrived at that conclusion? A graphics card sends out a series of signals on a multi cable. Any one of the pins or connectors could be bent. Might be your monitor. If a card fails, it is usually completely gone.

Before you invest in new anything, you’ve got to know what’s wrong. Hook up another monitor and plug your monitor into another Mac. Try a new cable between the monitor and the card.

FCP doesn’t use the card directly for anything so you gain nothing from an improved GPU.

If you plan to use Motion, be sure you buy a minimum card from the specs for that product. Be aware that some cards are specific to some machines. If you don’t need Motion, you can put in a PCI card for $25 but if you need a new AGP card, you spend whatever you can afford and choose the mfr you like.

Go back to the original clip and apply your color correction before, upstream, of the multi-angle sequence.
Not sure why this is giving you trouble.
