“Annoying” only begins to describe AutoSelect; I normally use far more colorful language to describe Apple’s interface decisions.

Look up AutoSelect in the online help system and be prepared to be misinformed, confused and ultimately bored.

But I might suggest you also prepare yourself for a complete reinstallation of FCP or Studio. Your machine has somehow lost the ability to track render files. No idea how it might have happened but it either totally esoteric or a weird user error such as renaming a drive or moving a scratch disk’s contents or having two projects with the same name.

Before you try anything dramatic, you might read up on the Render Manager operations and play with that next-to-useless beast for a few minutes. It’s supposed to know when to replace your render files as they become useless or outdated. It’s easy to screw it up since it seems to be based on the same terribly flawed database files that talk to the thrice-cursed Media Manager.

Lots of third party filters and plugins or such elegant effects can just take a little work directly inside FCP. You need to know nesting and mirroring, difference mattes, rotation, distortion, and the ever-popular “I can steal that effect in ten keyframes” deconstruction exercise.

The best speeds are all whole numbers of pixels/lines per second. Any ratio that returns an odd decimal or fraction will create pixels that don’t exist between scan lines. These tend to flicker in and out of existence at 1/60th second between lines. You’d think that Apple would have dealt with this universally perplexing issue automatically by now; it’s bad program design. Bad programming, too. Unlike Adobe’s After Effects, Apple’s subpixel rendering totally sucks.

You can also import a tall and narrow, rasterized still image of your text and animate the position of the still. This allows you to change the speed. if necessary, or to pause. You can apply motion blur and vertical Gaussian in discrete amounts. Drop shadows and other subtle effects tremendously enhance credit rolls but they’re not appropriate in all cases.

We have two Panasonic rigs, E75 and E85, The 85 has a huge drive onboard, the 75 is a VHS-DVD dubber.

Both do basic recording however, be aware of two things: The marketing hype is nothing but lies and the interfaces for these machines are stupidly disgusting lapses of intelligence. Everything must be done via the remote control paddle including all text entry. It’s insane.

The image quality is tolerable at full speed but if you try to use the compression options to get more than 2 hours on a DVD the image is completely destroyed, useful only for archives. If you go to the 4 or 8 hour modes all you get is blocky mush. These products wastes of money if you expect them to do ANYTHING other than record live to DVD. Why people are buying them for their “advanced stupidity” features is a wonder. I’d wait for a stand-alone version of a DVD recorder that has a Firewire input and a computer interface.

The current crop of recorders in the $250-$1,000 range is one-trick crap.

You’re not going to like migrating to FCP.
Suggest you obtain one of the “FCP for Avid Users” books before you commit. The move may not be worth doing till you’ve gotten your current inventory of projects out the door.

There are thousands of disaffected and Avid users and they’ve become happy FCP users. But there are thousands of folks who just cannot tolerate this kind of change. It’s a different app. Doesn’t do stuff the same way, doesn’t work the same way, doesn’t handle its job the same way. Everything is abruptly weird.

Not much of a mystery on the surface: The external RAID probably requires some bits at startup before it can be seen or accessed; could be the drivers for the card or the RAID driver. Are you sure the card, drive or RAID software mfr has promised you the ability to start from the external RAID?

Sorry not be able to give you a definitive replay, my RAID experience stopped several years ago when we replaced our SCSI junk with Firewire. But back then, we could not start from the RAID because there was no way for the Macintosh to know it was even connected until after the System loaded.

CAUTION:

All of these solutions have drawbacks. For instance, CarbonCopyCloner can create two different kinds of images and one will not bring all invisible Unix files across. Some apps create as proprietary file format that requires another copy of the app before you can recover the file.

Pick one and try it out. Read the docos carefully,, they’re not deliberately deceptive but they’re not crystal clear, either.
And I strongly urge you to figure out a way to TEST the recovery procedures before you need them. I’ve had Retrospect fail miserably at my shop on more than two occasions, both were user problems, easily preventable.

It’s not the card.
Dunno what might be causing your green tints but it’s not the card.
Easy to check, swap it out with an y other AGP card for G4. Don’t expect miracles if you decide to make the leap, FCP doesn’t have hooks into a graphics card like, say, Motion.
