how do I copy paste from v3 to v4?
Posted by Eskatonia on September 4, 2005 at 7:20 pmok I know there must be a simple answer but this drives me crazy.
how do I copy/paste a clip from v3 to v4 picking the start location with the playhead?
I have tried locking all other tracks selecting v4 as v1 and then hitting paste and it still pastes into the locked track that the clip came from…
there must be an easy way I’m missing..
any help appreciated thanks

September 4, 2005 at 7:48 pmAfter copying the clip in v3, hold down the Option key and click on the track selector button which is that little black box in each track. And you must Option click that box before each and every Paste.
Silly thing that was implemented with FCP 4.0 and it’s annoying as heck, but that’s how you do it.

September 4, 2005 at 8:33 pmI double-click the clip I want in the timeline so it opens back up in the viewer. Then from there I drag it back down to the timeline to the new track I want it on (If I’m synching it up the I leave the snapping on).
Watch the little arrow that appears as you drag into the timeline, depending on your position in the timeline it will either point right (insert) or down (overwright). My guess is your duplicating the footage from 3 to 4 right? so you’ll want to overwrite it. It actually takes a little hand-eye coordination.
Once you do the double-click to get it up in the viewer you can also overwrite the video with the usual edits like hitting F10, but you have to make sure you have moved the video patch from V3 to V4, and that you have in in-point at the start of the clip. This is one of the very few cases where I actually prefer to drag and drop.

“Annoying” only begins to describe AutoSelect; I normally use far more colorful language to describe Apple’s interface decisions.
Look up AutoSelect in the online help system and be prepared to be misinformed, confused and ultimately bored.
