  • Boris Text generators instantly crash FCP5

Posted by Rob Birnholz on September 7, 2005 at 3:19 am

I need to create a ten-minute text crawl, but anytime I click on ANY of the Boris text generator controls FCP5 instantly quits. No errors, no nothing, just one of those vanishing-application type of crashes. I have the same result with two seperate installs of FCP5, one in Tiger and one in 10.3.9. FCP’s native text generators all work, but unfortunately that’s not saying much.

Anyone have a suggesstion that might make the Boris filters usable?

They’re all working here just fine. When you installed Tiger, did you do a Clean Install?

also, have you run all the updates for both the OS and FCP?

Do you have a capture card installed?.. In the distant past there was a version of the Aurora Igniter driver which would cause this…Aurora fixed it in an update.

    Hi Rob,

Try using a standard screen setup and make sure the video scopes panel is not open… found this bug in Red with FCP 5.0.2. All generators work fine with only one screen in use for FCP.

I’ve had a similar experience with the Boris generator as well as with a trial version of Boris Graffiti. It didn’t crash on me every time, but probly like every other time. If i ever went to readjust a piece of text it would just crash to desktop no warning. I seem to recall reading somewhere that this problem was caused by a corrupt or possibly a duplicate font. Try doing a search on the Forum.

    Hiya ROB!
Welcome to the family. You may have had your FCP system for years but I just saw your name here.

The other FCP answer guys will have you fixed up shortly. Fortunately for me, all the Boris tools work on my two systems.

Thanks everyone so far for the suggestions. Haven’t nailed the problem yet, but I may be getting closer. The crash log indicates it may be a font issue, but even after reducing the system down to six basic fonts (and a fresh FCP install), Calligraphy still crashes FCP5 here.

Now that it’s morning, I’ll send the log to Boris and see what they think… in the meantime, I’ve done a full clean Tiger/FCP install on a spare drive and will continue to try and track down the problem.

(FWIW, I have done a test with Apple’s text crawl filter, and while it’s clunky, slow and limited I was suprised at the final result. But for a 15 minute long crawl, I don’t think it’s practical).
