The file on your drive will be permanently altered, the name will be changed to reflect the reel number. If you have not started editing, you should be golden. If you’ve started, all of your media will need to be manually relinked since the source has been deleted, as far as FCP is concerned. ONce you’ve started to use the newly named media, your exported lists should be okay but I do not use AD software nor do I trust and EDL as far as I can spit. Give yourself plenty of time to run a test file by your Avid guy/gal.Umm, at least, that’s what happened to me in FCP4.5 when I altered several reels’ worth of footage. Minor inconvenience but I wasn’t going out to another system.

How are you controlling the deck? RS422 (or is it 244?) via the black magic box, yes?
Sounds like your issue is with Black Magic or with Panasonic, not with FCP.ON our old Beta decks, the insert function was only enabled from a hidden menu on the deck’s operation and setup system.

It’s very confusing, yes. But, trust me, you’ve done something wrong. Media Manager bites so try looking over the procedure one more time and try it again. You will eventually figure it out.
Two possibilities, you have somehow told MM that you want both versions of the clips or your target volume already contains the clips with those names. Can you send your new clips elsewhere or delete the originals?Sorry not to have better advice. Media manager is a huge weak spot and there is no excuse for it. But we’re stuck with it. Also hope you get better help.

I don’t know anything about that deck but the most common explanation for this is that the deck in use does not support insert edits. There are only a few high zoot DV decks that will do edits and they perform them using pre-recod storage. the nature of DV more or less prevents insert editing since it is a digital file, not an analog tape format.
Umm, but like I say, I don’t know anything about your deck.

Was the drive properly formatted for Mac Extended, journaling off?
Are you sure you have set permissions and ownership on the disk properly?It’s all quite confusing, Tina, and I’m afraid there are no clear answers to these kinds of questions; too many possibilities. I can tell you that the beach ball usually indicates your application is not responding, the Mac OS is swapping out huge amounts of data to your drive’s virtual memory or your drive has actually gone to sleep. So check your screensaver and energy saver settings to make sure your system drive is set to NEVER.

It’s often simply a matter of shutting down, waiting a few moments, and restarting your Macintosh. This resets the FW and USB ports and buses. Dunno if it will help, sorry, never used a JVC deck.

You won’t gain anything, sorry. It’s essentially the same file and it’s still going to the same destination.
There might be other choices, though, and they depend on your source format and your target format, which you have not supplied. For instance, you could edit on the videotape easily and seamlessly. If you’re going to DVDSP, you can perform the edit in the timeline there, umm, I think. Or you could compress the two files and then stitch them together inside QTPro, maybe, and just save the new file. Can’t do that with many formats like MPEG2 since it depends on GOPs.
If you really need more suggestions, you will need to supply additional information.

Try to relax, it’s the only possible way you can enough perspective to analyze your situation.
Your post only has enough information for me to draw some broad conclusions and make sweeping statements:
You’ve come up against a simple file-tracking issue. FCP wants to stay connected to the original files. If you move them you must replace the connections, reconnect. But if the file isn’t exactly the same, the reconnection may fail. The procedures for working on the same projects on separate systems is complicated and precise. There is no way for us to know from here if you’re following that procedure.The simplest answer is to recapture your missing pieces. Then move everything to your portable drive. Everything. Erase everything else. Everything. Reconnect everything to the portable. Everything. Move the protable between machines, keep nothing on your local drives.
