“OFFLINE” ISSUES ON FCP 4.5
I am sweating the offline issue right now.
I had worked hours on FCP 4.5 at home today and now many of my files are offline on my home computer!
With regards to my picture montage sequence files, someone told me it’s not a good idea to have media files on my desktop, so I deleted all the media files on my desktop, however, I still have the media files from the picture montage that I’m working on in my LaCie external hard drive.
I’m also working on another project in my computer. After saving my work on that, I copied my sequence file and the media files in my computer to my LaCie external hard drive. Then I go back to FCP 4.5 again because there was something I needed to check. THEN I discover that all of my room tone audio files and extra video that I captured within the last few days are now OFFLINE.
I followed the directions you have given me, I get the reconnect prompt and click the sequence file I’m working on, all it does is brings me back to the reconnect prompt without bringing the offline files online. Plus everytime I get out of FCP, the Autosave, Thumbnail and Waveform media files keep popping up on my desktop.
It’s now 3 in the morning. I am very upset over this and I am losing sleep. Has it been corrupted? Do I need to delete all the offline files and recapture all the files I’ve just lost offline?

Try to relax, it’s the only possible way you can enough perspective to analyze your situation.
Your post only has enough information for me to draw some broad conclusions and make sweeping statements:
You’ve come up against a simple file-tracking issue. FCP wants to stay connected to the original files. If you move them you must replace the connections, reconnect. But if the file isn’t exactly the same, the reconnection may fail. The procedures for working on the same projects on separate systems is complicated and precise. There is no way for us to know from here if you’re following that procedure.The simplest answer is to recapture your missing pieces. Then move everything to your portable drive. Everything. Erase everything else. Everything. Reconnect everything to the portable. Everything. Move the protable between machines, keep nothing on your local drives.

Good news! It turned out that when I deleted all the media files from my desktop, that was what caused my audio files in my project to go offline. For some strange reason, when I checked System Settings, all the media files was pointed at my desktop and not at my FCP Documents file. I have since resetted the System Settings and I also batch captured all the clips that went offline. Everything is back to where it was before. Many thanks to everyone out here who helped me! 🙂
