Can you give a few more details here.

What drives, speeed, resolution are you working in. number of streams, filters applied etc., which RT setting is being used System config. ?

From my experience any kind of flashing usually indicates that there is a drive speed issue. The compter, drives software and hardware can not keep up with what you are asking it too do which makes sense becase it plays a rendered file ine.

Well. Mjpeg is a nice variable frame size codec. Letting you go from 1k-13.3k in SD.

It is also a 4:4:4 codec when it is at 100% that is tprobably the biggeset thing you gain.

Problem will be this: it is a compressed codec so that means there is likelyhood of a lot of RT. Uncompressed actually gives you more RT because as you add to an uncompressed stream you are not asking the computer (or in some cases the card) to do all of the compressing on the fly. Some codecs (the DV codecs for example) are very good at this and their algorithms allow for multiple streams and they have been “optimized for video”. Many people would like to see this type of optimization with the M-Jpeg codecs because they are so flexible. This might also pave the way for some mixxed resolutions in the Timline. IE. a 1k, 5k, nd 13K Jpeg compression rates all playing back in one timeline.

That is some of it. I think it also carries an alpha channel. Graeme Nattress has many opinions on this, maybe he will find this thread.

You have to blow up 4X3 footage so that it can fit the 16×9 frame. the only other option is to “Pilar Box” (black bars on left and right instead of top and bottom). I think the blow up is 132% in order to fill the frame.

The anamorphic adaptor is heavey and limits the focal length of the fixxed lens and you loose two stops.

The squeeze mode is a more seemless (but lower qulaity?) way of doing 16×9. The Canon uses a digital 16×9 as weel.

The advantage to the Canon id that you can use Canon interchangable lenses and just use the squeeze mode (but you might notice a slight loss in quality) but with the squeeze mode your focus will stay sharp through the whole range of the lens and you will not loose two stops.

You can weigh the advantages for yourself, in doc situations its nice to shoot in squeeze mode because you can not control every lighting situation etc and it’s nice to not have the extra weight of the lens.

    Joe,

I have seen the 1920 x 1080 Sharp Aquos 50″ and it is absolutely gorgeous and an pixel for pixel resolution of HD uncompressed. I have to say that it looked terrible looping the Component signal, but with a miranda HD-SDI to DVI adaptor (1300.00) it looked gorgeous.

Here is one huge caution on the monitor. It does not play back 23.98 natively with out this Miranda adapter that adds pulldown. It does play 29.97 though.

The sharp is also considerably more expensive than the Panny. Plasma will burn in and LCD will not so you have to be careful of what frame you leave “parked” on a plasma because once it’s burned in, it’s there.

FYI: I could not get my hands on a SONY L5/1 son I went with the JVC equivalent and I have been very happy with it.

    https://pro.jvc.com/prof/Attributes/press_res.jsp?model_id=MDL101334&feature_id=08

It is multisync multiformat and actually has 100 more lines of resolution than the SONY.

I think that compressor is the way for you to go.

Compressor uses Shakes optical flow technology and does a very smooth 30 to 24P conversion. I did extensive testing of this workflow for a 24P project that had 59.94 footage in it. This produced the best results

    I would

    1. Dub to DVCpro50 30i
    2. Capture
    3. Createa acompressor setup that converts 30 to 24 at highest quality.
    4. Batch render the movies to the codec you are editing in.
    5. Import and edit

The resuting movies are like you camera tapes and will be seemlessly integrated. You could even do all of your 4×3 to anamorphic cropping convert to anamorphic if you wanted to.

I have FCP 5 on a completely new system with clean install. Maybe I can trash prefs but it threw for a bit of a loop. I don’t like bugs, but this one is bearable as long as it is this easy to troubleshoot.

    Thanks,

I’ll try trashig prefs and the POA cache.

    Very odd.

If I create a new sequence and copy paste the material in then the four tacking works, but if I change the setting s of an existing sequence then it does not work.

I’ll send this in a s a feature request for sure.
