HD monitor price insanity – RANT !
Hi –
I often make fun of people who start crying when AJA or Blackmagic has a price change of a couple of hundred dollars, and they just bought their stuff a couple of months ago, and they want a “refund” or feel they should have been told in advance about the price changes.Well, at the NAB2005 show in April 2005, the wonderful Panasonic 50″ Plasma
HDTV was about $6000 everywhere, and now, in September 2005, it $3000 everywhere !!!!! This is cheaper than what B+H was just charging for the Sony PVM-20L5/1, and NOW, the Sony PVM-20L5/1 monitor (Walter’s and my favorite)- is now OFF the B+H website, so I guess it finally happened. Sony said they were going to discontinue this line, and now it looks like it finally happened – 5 months after the announcement. It’s good news that you can get the monsterous Panasonic 50″ for the same price you paid for the 20L5 – but I understand that most people simply dont have the space for a 50″ monitor.So to all those whiners out there – can you tell me who to cry to at Panasonic to get the $3000 back – because $3000 is a lot more than $300.

I just spoke with the folks at Showcase Video here in Atlanta and they have three PVM-L5/1 20″ and several 14″ models.

I’ll put that in my larger suite and move the 42″ to the smaller suite! Man I’m betting Finding Nemo will look great on that! Whoops, of course I mean Good Eats, after all I would never watch a movie for fun while I’m working. 🙂

Please shut up!!!! If you have not made your money back within 2 minutes of buying the monitor then you are doing something wrong.
Ok just kidding but what goes around comes around.
All I can ask from you is please in the future never insult anyone who complains about price drops after having made a major investment.

Thanks so much for mentioning the price drop on the Panny 50″. I’ve gone ahead and ordered both the 50″ and the Sony PVM-20L5/1 from a local VAR today for about the same price as what the Panny was a few weeks ago. I’ve been waiting on the second PVM monitor for our second suite for a bit and now it just made for perfect timing to get both. Thanks!

The 50″ Panasonic Plasma Screen is great!! I’ve been using it for about a month now and I can’t imagine what it was like without it. I purchased the HD-SDI card for it and all my HD stuff looks incredible! The model number for the monitor is: TH-50PHD7. I got it from B&H for $2999.

Is there much advantage in using a full 1920 x 1080 monitor like the Sharp Aquos 50″ or the Samsung DLP? All the plasmas I see out there are maxxed out at 1366 x 768.

I have seen the 1920 x 1080 Sharp Aquos 50″ and it is absolutely gorgeous and an pixel for pixel resolution of HD uncompressed. I have to say that it looked terrible looping the Component signal, but with a miranda HD-SDI to DVI adaptor (1300.00) it looked gorgeous.
Here is one huge caution on the monitor. It does not play back 23.98 natively with out this Miranda adapter that adds pulldown. It does play 29.97 though.
The sharp is also considerably more expensive than the Panny. Plasma will burn in and LCD will not so you have to be careful of what frame you leave “parked” on a plasma because once it’s burned in, it’s there.
FYI: I could not get my hands on a SONY L5/1 son I went with the JVC equivalent and I have been very happy with it.

It is multisync multiformat and actually has 100 more lines of resolution than the SONY.

I could be wrong here, but I am now told that MODERN current Plasma screens like the
new Panasonic plasma DO NOT burn, and that this is an urban legend that applied to early plasmas. Again, I don’t know this for a fact and I could be wrong about it (I read an article in a pro video magazine about this – who knows how accurate the author was).As for other screens, tne absolute best screen I ever saw was in March 2005 at the NSCA show in Orlando, where Samsung showed their new 460P LCD screen 46″ – it was full 1920×1280 resolution, and much brighter than even the Panasonic – but again, it was at a trade show, and I have no idea of what this $6000 monitor looks like in real life, with real footage, and I have no idea of how well it plays with the AJA Kona 2 and AJA HDP. I see this monitor now being advertised in all the pro A/V magazines (for airport signage displays, etc.), but I would not want to be the first one to spend $6000 on it, and find out that it’s not what I saw at the trade show.
The Panasonic gained credibility from being at almost every booth at NAB2005, including AJA and Blackmagic.
