4:3 footage in an anamorphic timeline
Hello,
I’m editing a movie with anamorphic video (DV Pal, 25 fps> I’m in Europe) in an anamorphic sequence in FCP 4.5. Works just fine. But I’m also using some digitized Super8 (yes!) footage that is not anamorphic, standard DV Pal, 25 fps, 720 x 576…
Does anyone one know how to use this material in an anamorphic sequence without distorting/ stretching the image?
Of course I can put everything in a normal 4:3 sequence and get letterboxed anamorphic and crop the 4:3 stuff but that’ll give me less quality right?thank you for your time

You have to blow up 4X3 footage so that it can fit the 16×9 frame. the only other option is to “Pilar Box” (black bars on left and right instead of top and bottom). I think the blow up is 132% in order to fill the frame.

I had a similar issue where I was using both 4:3 footage from a Canon XL1s and 16:9 from an XL2. I did the latter that you mentioned which was create a 4:3 sequence and put both the anamorphic and standard into it. There is no loss of quality. You just have to do a quick render of the anamorphic footage so that it WILL display at full quality. Then, just add your letterbox matte to your standard footage to match your anamorphic. That’s what I did. Hope it helps.
