  • I know it’s my mistake, I just am pi$$ed about the total lack of assistance that Apple produces.

    I am trying to install 5.1, and I am using the serial number from my original software. It’s just that this install asks for 3 previous serial numbers. FCP, DVDSP and Motion.

    We can install without this, but it means using one of our other Studio copies serial number, which means disconnecting that computer from our in house network.

    In short, there is no one you can speak to that can resolve the problem at Apple. NO ONE IS RESPONSIBLE. It amazed me the registration is for marketing only.

    So add Apple’s lack of upgrades this year to the suite – less RT than most wintel editing situations, trouble running Photoshop on the new machines (Whichis why we have G5’s and not MacPros) and I’m getting tired of saying the emperors new clothes look great.

    I know, I’m posting my frustrations on a forum where we’re all mac heads, and I am currently still in that camp, but fair is fair – Apple’s got to start being helpful.

    We produce a number of How 2 videos, and we found the length of the zoom to be a factor. If I were to add the M2, and I have a large collection of Nikon glass, could I get closer and still be tack sharp?

    Does anyone have experience with using this for non cine applications?

    Why not record DV on the mini DV tape drive at the same time you record HD to the P2 card or Firestore.

    You can work with the mini DVD stuff, and archive the HD.

    It doesn’t solve your problem if you really want to use DVCPRO 50 though I know.

    We shoot all our stuff in HD, post it in HD, and then down convert to SD for distribution. That might help you.

  • The cheapest solution, that still gives you full HD would be something like this:

    Decklink HD card – lowest cost: $700
    Decklin HDLink – $700.00
    Apple 23 inch Cinemadisplay: $1299 (on sale for $1100 sometimes)

    Total: $2700.00 per station.

    It not only gives you mopnitoring, but it also gives you full HD input and output

    On the otherhand, you could wait for the release of the Matrox device that will output to a 3rd cinema display. That would still present a price of about $2500.00

    I am using solution 1, except I have a Kona 2 Card.

    It works well for me.

    We’ve been using one, daily for about a month now.

    It has never dropped a frame (1080i and 720p). It interfaces with the Mac very well, and we believe it is the greatest tool for long capture stuff.

    Having said that, we have a second setup that is based on using P2 cards, and as a reader a P2Store. It also works well. One is designed to shoot in run and gun-remote setups, and the other is nore for studio(Firestore)

    We are also planning on purchasing one of the other Firestore like devices when they are released this summer.

    Yes, I appreciate the other marvelous things the XDCAM-HD player deck can do, but guys, if you think it justifies the price, please go ahead, buy one. There is timecode and other broadcast professional features in decks that Mr. Sony sells for less than $2K. But when you put that same stuff, already designed, etc suddenly a glorified DVD burner sells for up to $20K – yes, that’s $20K for something that will also rwite back to the disk.

    Remember, the author is looking for our opinions? We’re suppose to be free to state them, not have to defend them? Why not write something that supports XDCAMHD if you feel strongly about it.

    I only recently made the same comparison – P2 won.

    There are other P2 camera’s aside from the HVX200. There is a DVCPRO50 camera that also shoots to the P2. I’m not sure if your comparison has to be in HD or not.

    I choose P2 for a few reasons. One was cost. While the camera cost didn’t phaze me at all, what did was the media reader. Sony wants between $11K and 20K for a deck to read what is in essence a modified blueray disk. They are also selling the Playstation 3, which is Blueray for around $500.00 this holiday season. Seems kinda unfair to charge 20-40X for the same media. Also Panasonic has a soon to be releasd Blueray Recorder that will sell under $1K, so I’m not so keen on the price from Sony.

    XDCAM is an MPEG 2 based capture method. I just finished with that with a 2 year love hate relationship with HDV. There is no “Fun” way to edit it. I’m not a proxy guy, I don’t know alot of people who like doing that. While the XDCAM adds more data than HDV, it’s still somewhat smaller than DVCPRO50 or DVCPRO HD (100). SO I like that there is more data.

    We decided instead on the P2. While I could afford a standard def P2 camera, I liked the image off the HVX, and instead bought 2 of them, cards, readers and a firestore.

    It’s a great HD and DVCPRO 50 camera, so I have not even pushed the eject button.
