  • Using Avid Express Pro HD macintosh with HVX200

Posted by James Fletcher on June 15, 2006 at 7:13 am

Is it possible to edit footage from the AG-HVX200 camera on a Macintosh Avid Express Pro HD 5.2?

Can you edit in the camera’s native codec or do you have to convert it?

Please respond because I am being forced to make a major workflow decision tomorrow.

    Thanks.

    Yes, it does:

    https://www.nefilm.com/news/archives/2006/03/panasonic.htm

“Both Final Cut Pro 5 and Avid Xpress Pro HD supports ingest of the MXF files created by the HVX200 from hard drives or P2 cards.”

The difference is that the Avid edits the MXF files natively, where FCP needs to import them and convert them to quicktime.

That’s not much of a conversion: QuickTime is just a ‘wrapper’ in this case, the codec stays native in FCP too.

    Hi,

Express Pro HD on a Mac will not support all of the frames rates and standards that the HVX does. Check out Michael Phillip’s web page below:

I spoke to Avid just yesterday, June 14th.

Version 5.5 for Macintosh is supposed to be released as a $49.95 upgrade on June 22.

This may support more frame rates.

Just to be really clear for James, Xpress Pro HD 5.0-5.2.x was and will never be available on the Mac. So the answer to your original question is no. As others have said Xpress Pro 5.5 is the release that brings the PC and Mac feature set together.

What level of RT would Avid 5.5 have on a dual processor Mac?

Does anyone have any idea about this?

    I suspect Avid does.

    Just for comparision:

FCP does three HDV streams on a MacBook in RT.
