Workflow for DVCPRO HD Downconvert
Posted by Harryd on July 23, 2006 at 1:15 amI was wondering how folks are downconverting HD footage from P2 to edit and use in SD projects? Import into FCP and then export, or some other way? I have no need to edit the HD footage now (my computer can’t handle it anyway), but doing a downconvert before ingest and edit sounds interesting.
thanks,

July 23, 2006 at 9:26 amYou cannot convert when you import. YOu can export to another format with QT Pro. But if you have no need for HD, why not shoot SD with the camera? It does that. And the DVCPRO HD requirements aren’t all that high.

July 23, 2006 at 10:33 amActually, that’s what I’m doing – using DVCPRO 50 Anamorphic. I like it. My system likes it. But I’m interested in HD for 2 reasons: First, I like to acquire in the best format I can for future use, which means acquiring in HD. Second, the P2 cards allow more storage (an extra 2 minutes on a 4GB card) for HD 720p24pn.

July 23, 2006 at 10:36 amOh, sorry, I meant to say, the big reason for all this is that I have a Quicksilver 2002 dual-proc G4, which just chokes on HD. I’ll be upgrading to a new Mac later this year, I’m waiting to see what Apple offers in the intel-o-mac towers.
thanks again,

July 23, 2006 at 10:39 pmWhy not record DV on the mini DV tape drive at the same time you record HD to the P2 card or Firestore.
You can work with the mini DVD stuff, and archive the HD.
It doesn’t solve your problem if you really want to use DVCPRO 50 though I know.
We shoot all our stuff in HD, post it in HD, and then down convert to SD for distribution. That might help you.

Because you can’t record to DV tape at the same time. The best you can do is record to P2, then dump it to DV tape later.
No, the best option would be to shoot and import everything, then downconvert using the Media Manager to a DV format.
