July 23, 2010 at 4:05 pm in reply to: Hey, Walter – what are your thoughts on the new Colorista II?I just spent a half hour or so with it. It’s much better than the old version. I agree with Walter that it certainly can’t replace Color, but it’s a great way to CC in FCP. It renders quickly, and has a good range of ways to adjust your image.
That being said, I have a couple of beefs – and again, I only spent about a half hour playing around with it:
I had trouble trying to use multiple instances of it. To try to use 2 secondaries, for example. Multiple instances (even with bypass primary turned on) create some funky additive adjustments.
I’d like to be able to re-set only certain settings, instead of the whole filter. Undo works better now, but it doesn’t seem to affect the HSL wheels, and its time consuming to try to undo back to where you were before.
Lastly, it seemed noisier than Color. Have you noticed that Walter? I did the CC’ing on my laptop, with no scopes other than the FCP internal ones, and once I brought it into the broadcast system, I think my gain was too high, so the noise may have been a function of too much exposure.
My two cents. Overall, a vast improvement over the last version, and a great CC’er for FCP.

2 more cents…
The more complicated your keyboard mapping is, the longer it will take you to rebuild it should your preferences get corrupted. (I also change my mapping fairly often; if I don’t use a mapped shortcut for a long time I don’t bother re-building it).
Make sure you save those customized settings, so you can move them from machine to machine, or re-load when necessary.
Next time you wash dishes, only use one hand. Yes, you can do it, but it’s miserable. Its the combination of hands that makes you fast and, more importantly, efficient.
I guess that was 3 cents.
Cheers.

Depends how you export it. If you don’t specifically tell it to convert using quicktime, it will export a same as source QT – whatever your sequence is.
If you want it to convert to H264, use the “export using quicktime conversion” option, and change the settings in the dialog box.
Personally, I export a same as source and then let compressor do the conversion using a droplet. That way you keep editing while compressor runs in the background. You can also “share” it with compressor, but I don’t have much experience with that one.
Cheers.

Congrats, Walter! I’m guessing by the photos that you’re not building in Midtown…where is the new location?

And the folder structure on the “bad” card is the same as the one on the “good” card, right?

No offense but, Are you sure the path to the media is correct? Maybe you need to go one step further in? I’m not familiar with the specific camera, but I’ve navigated to the wrong folder on many occasions…

You can make an Apple Script that creates folders, etc. Include a copy command and then you can “save as: paste” in FCP.

You could also make yourself a Motion template. Only publish the text you want to change (date, title) to FCP. Then add the master template to each sequence, change the date and title in controls and Bob’s your uncle.

Turner is moving to FInal Cut, but we’re not giving up on Avid; we still have Avid suites, and online suites. There are still huge advantages in Avid. There are still jobs I would rather take into an online suite any day.
And hey, we cut short form, too. Our biggest challenge has been getting 40+ suites to work together, using shared media, mobile users, multiple input and output formats, multiple frame rates, etc.
The way I see it, they’re all tools, and we’re all carpenters. Either figure it out, or leave it alone.

Is that the only file you cant render? Could be a permissions problem. Check the permissions on the file. I’ve had that error message a lot recently due to permissions on files copied from other drives, and other systems. Also make sure the file plays okay elsewhere – it could be corrupt. You may not have done anything wrong…
