Most things are mapped or can be remapped to the keyboard. But there would be a ton of keystrokes to memorize. The more keyboard editing you can do the faster you will be but I don’t know of anyone that is no mouse or graphic tablet.

You can see what everything in FCP is mapped to and then remap things you find missing. You have to be willing to put in a lot of time to get it setup and learned.

For real, I have a friend that has remapped most of his keys, and if I’m every there is a madden. I have trouble remembering the standard ones. I hit the “l” key 10 times before I stop cursing and asking what FCP will not play the timeline.

Going from Viewer to timeline, and manipulating on the timeline…sure, possible. But how about opening bins and loading footage into the Viewer? Without using the mouse that must be a pain and a half. And the amount of keystrokes that might be involved in doing that will take far less than two or three clicks.

Swapping shots, moving shots on the timeline…mouseless? I shudder at the thought…

As someone that finds himself walking around in circle a lot, I not sure I want anything hooked up to my brian. No telling where things would wind up.

there are many functions in FCP that require the mouse,
and while there are ways to do almost all of them with keyboard commands only, that is actually a slower way of working.

    however, a couple of tips:

anything that is in a menu can have a shortcut assigned to it,
    and may already have one.

if you find yourself going to the menu for anything more than a few times a day,
    DONT use the menu.
if it has a shortcut, see what it is, then use that.
after you’ve done that a few times you will have learnt the shortcut.

if it doesn’t have a shortcut, give it one.

i have heaps of shortcuts that live programmed,
but for the most part, i don’t re-assign the FCP ones.
that just makes life difficult, IMO.

well, a mouseless editing is a very fast way to make rough cuts or to do what i call ” cleaning the rushes” if you digitized a whole tape and you need to choose ur useful shots and organize them into different sequences for faster access later … your standard keyboard shortcuts are enough to switch between browser canvas and timeline , to open sequences and bins, control the patch bay in your sequence, choose the tools, choose clip from the browser, zooming, navigating on the sequence, adding or removing in/out point and marks and even making an edit to tape ,etc…

but when it comes to trimming, fine tuning , using effects or keyframes, using any of the tools, there is no escape but to use the mouse …

I prefer using the Jedi Mind trick on my FCP. Funny enough, it wont work on a PC.

    FCP 6.06, OS 10.5.8 2x3GHZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon, Kona LHe, Dulce Duo-eSATA 8 Drive, 4TB Raid.

    Hi,
I love the EPOC headset! That would make my job even easier! But alas! It is not MAC capable.
I am still waiting for the holographic screens Tom Cruise used in the Minority Report.

I see this as a challenge.
How much can one do without the mouse without compromising speed?
