It seems at least a few of his major gripes have fairly straightforward workflow solutions. For example, his chronic crashing may be the result of poor system set-up and resistance to converting a multiplicity of original media formats into a single productive format.

May 6, 2010 at 10:35 pmI doubt that Edgar who was the visual effects editor for “The Hunt for Red October” and who won an Emmy for best editor for a TV series in 1992, has worked on projects with George Lucas, & edited an Oscar nominated Feature Doc, has workflow issues. FCP is sill way behind MC5 as a Professional tool.

Clearly, he has never asked for help here at the Creative Cow, and I can assure you, his experiences are neither indicative of those FCP users who know their way around under the hood of FCP or of those who ask for help from others around here who know these things.
A membership in ACE does not grant anyone immunity from learning those things they don’t know, or from asking others for help. And, with that in mind, I hope he has better luck with Avid.

May 6, 2010 at 10:42 pmI have seen it…and commented on it in the few forums this has popped up.
It boils down to his familiarity with the NLE and the level of talent he surrounds himself with. You need support people (assistants, rental companies) that know the NLE and how to make it purr. And you yourself need to know the gotchas that might come along. Avid has them too, I have encountered my fair share.
Walter Murch has a talented pool of assistants, and Digital Film Tree on his team…and yes, there were hiccups. But it all worked. It sounded like this editor didn’t have a good support staff that was knowledgeable with FCP, and he himself seems to hold onto his Avid knowledge and trying to apply it to FCP, which you simply cannot do. You have to unlearn what you have learned (to quote Yoda).
Let him go back to Avid…it’s a fine system. But bitching that FCP is useless and horrid… well, he can voice his opinion all he wants. Many of us use FCP and it works fine. MORE than fine.

May 6, 2010 at 11:32 pmwe’re managing almost 400 hours and 60TB of material across 5 workstations here. Nothing but documentaries and broadcast shows going on. If we had a system configuration like his, I would be out of business.
Clear example of poor configuration and trying to force the Avid workflow on FCP. Shame they couldn’t get the system set up correctly for him.

May 7, 2010 at 2:17 amTurner is moving to FInal Cut, but we’re not giving up on Avid; we still have Avid suites, and online suites. There are still huge advantages in Avid. There are still jobs I would rather take into an online suite any day.
And hey, we cut short form, too. Our biggest challenge has been getting 40+ suites to work together, using shared media, mobile users, multiple input and output formats, multiple frame rates, etc.
The way I see it, they’re all tools, and we’re all carpenters. Either figure it out, or leave it alone.
