Check that your timeline settings match your clip settings exactly. If they don’t (could be codec/size/frame rate etc) then FCP will want to render the clip to make it match. Depending on your settings it will attempt this in “realtime” to greater or lesser success, which is why your clip is stuttering.

Once you’re in Photoshop you can use the Video > Deinterlace filter. Then you get a chance to experiment with which field looks better for you, Odd or Even.

I’m racking my brains about why you might want to do this, and can’t really think of one.
Your workflow sounds like:
Edit(Quicktime DV) -> After Effects -> Rendered (Quicktime DV)to your edit -> Output
By exporting out as an image sequence after the edit stage you won’t inherently be gaining anything as opposed to exporting out as a By Reference Quicktime (or using something like Automatic Duck) to get you into After Effects. What you want to avoid doing is to render or transcode through lossy codecs too often. DV is already highly compressed.
Use image sequences if your output method requires it, but not arbitrarily. Image sequences are not “better” than Quicktime movies – a Quicktime movie can use a lossless codec (eg Animation) or lossy (eg DV or the highly lossy H264) just as an image sequence can be lossless (eg Targa) or lossy (JPEG).
Bottom line – don’t try to complicate your life. If you’re going in QT DV, work as far as you can with your original QT DV file, without transcoding/rerendering unnecessarily.

Hi Eric,
Another couple of small things to try:
i) Have you trashed your AE preferences yet and/or reinstalled After Effects?
ii) Do you have any hardware supporting your Final Cut (Blackmagic card or similar)? If so, have you reinstalled the latest drivers for your card?
iii) Do a Repair Permissions on your system drive.The Video Out component is the thing that lets you see your AE comp on an external monitor, which is why I ask about your FCP hardware.

All titles use an alpha channel to “cut out” the text over the video. If it didn’t you’d never get to see your video underneath :o)

If this is something that has just happened recently, then has something changed in your system?
My first guess without other information would be to update/downgrade you graphics card driver. Depending on your card manufacturer, they may have a recommended driver for After Effects – and it’s often not the latest one they’ve qualified.

Hi Tom,
If you export out uncompressed audio from FCP, you can use Toast (or another piece of burning software) to do the proper formatting for an audio CD. If you just burn a wav file to a CD-R then this won’t be playable in a regular CD player.

I’m assuming you mean “self contained” Quicktime movie, right? But what I’m not sure of is what you’re really asking for. Quicktime, itself is just a wrapper for your information – the video and audio are in their own codecs within this wrapper. If you want compressed video and uncompressed audio in the same file then simply output as a Quicktime movie and change the settings in the Options tab.
If you want just the audio out as an uncompressed WAV file then choose Export > Quicktime Conversion and change the format to Wave. You’ll want to check the options again for things like sample rate and bit depth.

If you want similar particles as combustion then you should look to the standalone Particle Illusion.
If you’d prefer something within After Effects then head straight over to look at Particular. It works great with the 3D in After Effects and is very very powerful.
Both offer demos so you can see which one fits you better.
