You’re right, the standard keyer filters in FCP are far from good.
You should take a look at the BorisFX Continuum set, there’s some good keying filters there that will plug straight into FCP.

You can do this very easily. All you have to do is copy the path from Illustrator (Ctrl-C), then paste that into AE (Ctrl-V).
If that doesn’t work straight away then check your Preferences in Illustrator. In the Fil Handling & Clipboard section, change the clipboard copy away from PDF. I can’t remember what the other option is off the top of my head I’m afraid.

If it is a memory error, then you can assign more memory to M100. Just control click on the application icon (the original not an alias), choose Get Info and change the memory allocation.
From (my) memory, about 100MB should be fine, but if this is still not enough, then just up it by 10MB at a time.
