You don’t say what type of QT you have exported to. A Quicktime movie can contain a number of different codecs, all with various strengths and weaknesses.

Have a look at the manual for more information. My rule of thumb is, if I want to go back to my NLE, then try to render in the same codec as the rest of the timeline (in my case that is usually a type of Apple ProRes). If I want a lossless copy for archiving or sending somewhere else, go with PNG (at 100% quality in the Quicktime container) and for smaller preview files, go with H264.

The quality/filesize of the H264 export in After Effects is probably not as good as you’d get from other dedicated compression software, like Sorensen Squeeze for example.

Like Todd, for the grass I’d go with the clone stamp linked to a motion tracker, in the first instance.

If that’s not enough then take a look at these tutorials to give you another idea on how to do it. The basic idea is to create a clean plate, a mask and track those to replace your object. This should work for the building too. You may need a bit more roto work, depending on your shot.

If you use the EOS Plugin in FCP then you can use Log and Transfer to do a selective transcode to ProRes of only the bits of the clips you want. This will save diskspace and make editing a bit faster too because you’ve already cut out some footage and have a chance to name your clips.

No. That’s the exact opposite of what I’m saying. Film at 60fps then playback at half speed in post. The settings for that are found in “Interpret Footage”, which is why I used that word there. Doing it that way will give you the best results – no new pixels, no interpolation, just what you put in played back slower. A tried and tested method.

Yes, that’s right. Just interpret the frames so they playback at half the shooting speed and it will sync with the original track.

Yes the Camtasia software can zoom in very nicely into the capture using the Zoom/Pan tab. So basically they capture the entire screen/window, then focus afterwards. Or you can capture just a specific area of the screen.

There is also a Camtasia for Mac now, so you can grab a trial copy to see whether you can use the client’s .camrec files directly. Then you can export directly to a more manageable Quicktime codec for further editing.

It sounds like you want to take a look at how you export your alpha channel as white fringing sounds like a classic premult problem.

Joe is right, you’d better settle in for a long roto session.

There are some things you can do for the hair, and if you’re lucky it will get rid of some of the foliage. Try to build up some procedural mattes first, to limit the amount of stuff you’ll have to roto. It’s still not going to be a simple task. It will probably help you keep in more hair detail.

Here’s a link to take you through the process.

If you are doing this sort of roto, I would highly recommend using Mocha or Mocha AE & mochaShape to take some of the pain out of it. The big boy version of mocha lets you deal a lot better with the motion blur. I go through lots of techniques in my paint & roto course Cut and Shut.

Good luck in your project. Some good quality coffee will make the whole thing a better experience!
