Hum.. .. with your express expansion card slot occupied with the MagmaExpress Box, are you going to be left with adequate drive speed through your left over FW800/400/USB2.0 ports to capture a live stream of uncompressed footage?

    No.

[Rennie] “I was able to figure out which was the bad camera because it’s tapes wouldn’t work in the decks either but as long as I captured from it, it worked. I never understood what was really going on though.

sounds like the heads are out of alignment on that one camera. I’ve seen it happen to one or two of our ENG cameras (DSR-300a’s) a couple times. The camera that shot the video will playback fine, but not an any other cameras or decks.

[David Roth Weiss] “Can you be more specific please, what is the watermark that QT Pro and Streamclip add to your clip? “

I believe he is referring to the “Flip-For-Mac” quicktime plugin. It gives quicktime the ability to play WMV files, and export .mov’s, ect… from WMV files.

The playability component is free, you have to pay for the ability to export. Otherwise any .mov’s you export will have a flip-for-mac watermark on it.

Give cinema tools a try. right click footage from Finder, open with cinema tools, choose conform.

Last week I was given some footage that was shot in 24P,, just dropped in timeline and rendered it looked awful.. Had little time before the piece had to go to air so I ran it through Cinema Tools.. Had never used Cinema Tools before,, but in minutes conformed the footage to 30FPS. The footage played faster in the FCP timeline,, but was totally smooth, just adjusted the playback speed and it was perfect.

I’m sure there probably is a better/propper way to deal with this,,, but in a pinch it saved my butt and playback was totally smooth.

You might not have the right codec associated to that avi file. Do you know what program created the avi files?

I’ve received Avid exported .mov files that required a D/L of special QT codecs before I could open/re-wrap to a FCP friendly format.

Have you tried to open in VLC Player? Usually, if I get a funky file that QT Player wont open, VLC will do the trick. mind you VLC player is just a player,, and wont convert the file into anything else for you.. but at least you might be able to get a look!

in your sequence -> render all drop down is every option checked?? especially “Full” If it isnt,, check it off and render again.. see if that helps.

October 1, 2007 at 6:06 am in reply to: Final Cut Pro 6.0 Strange Behavior

I run into the audio problem at least a few times a month..
I usually see this when packaging sports broadcasts. I use typically use two projects for packaging,, one “Elements Master project,” and one “Gameday Build Project.” I copy and paste GFX/SFX/Music and such from the Elements master into the gameday build. The render file confusion Jeremy mentioned causes audio files to slip timing within themselves. It can often be subtle,, and not noticed till final output…

To be safe,, when working with projects like this (multiple copy/pastes) and right before final print, I lasso and right click all the audio clips in the sequence.. select remove attributes, make sure nothing is selected and hit OK, this detaches it from any wayward render files and problem is gone. Then do an audio mixdown right before edit to tape.

perhaps just a mixdown would fix any issues in the sequence,, but I like to be safe,, especially with live broadcast deadlines looming overhead, and the time to re-output doesn’t always exist!

September 30, 2007 at 5:40 pm in reply to: Similar effects to Avid’s?(plug in suggestions)

I’ve used both the morph in Avid and the CHV and CGM morphs in FCP.

You wont get quite as clean a morph out of the CHV or CGM morph as you would with the one that ships with Avid (or used to ship with,, been a few years since on an avid) but they are decent. I find they use a little too much cross-dissolve,, and not quite enough fluid transformation,, but with a little time and patience you can get a nice morph out of them.

Personally, I stuck with the CGM pack (vol3) ’cause it came bundled with some other plug-ins I saw potential for,, but they are both similar.

I think the CGM package is about $180,, and comes with a bunch of other good plugs,, however you can buy the CHV morph collection on its own for about $60.

  • No, not in the case of motion anyway. when you “round trip” to motion, Final Cut creates a sequence that contains the original unmodified “sent” media, and replaces that chunk of media in the sequence you are sending from with the .motn file that references any changes you’ve made in motion leaving the newly created sequence untouched.

If you want to revert back to the pre-motion clips, simply open the sequence that was created when you ‘sent’ the clips to motion,, and voila… untouched media.
