I also found this software: MovieCaptioner from https://www.synchrimedia.com.

For the more reasonable $129 will create the .scc and various other caption formats… GUI could use an update and definitely doesn’t have anywhere near the bells and whistles as the MacCaption… But looks like it may do what I need it to…

The particular network I need to deliver this project to I believe will accept 608 embedded. Will send them a test and make sure before I pump out the full project..

Thanks – Trying to figure out a workflow that does not include the +$1700 for MacCaption/CaptionMaker… ????

Edit is happening in FCPX with caption file added via Compressor. Compressor will apparently only add captions to either a Quicktime file (prores) or mpeg program stream export, but not to MXF export…

I guess I could add the .scc file onto the data track in Avid… but have heard it can be hit or miss…

  • Thanks for checking guys!

I’ve heard of issues in a couple other programs now that the Odyssey records audio at 32bit (Audio was 16bit before latest update). Pluraleyes is also apparently having trouble with the files now that the Odyssey recorder captures audio at 32bit.

  • Thanks for looking – Will ask them to try AMA Link and Consolidate… See if that works!

Could be a Windows issue with the new files that are being generated from the Odyssey. I have seen a thread or two elsewhere of some folks having issues on Windows machines since Convergent Design recently updated the firmware of the recorders.

Would love to know if any windows users are able to work with the clip as well.

  • Here is a clip from that shoot – If anyone could – bring it down and see if you have any issue importing the file… If yes or no, pls respond with Avid version and OS (Win or Mac).

Would like to know if it is an issue isolated to that particular facility, OS, Avid version, or import settings issue…

  • Ver 8.3 I believe, on windows. It’s at a major market broadcast station on a network storage system with Interplay – they are fairly slow to update software.
I shot the material and left the footage with the station’s promo editor whom is having the import issues, so not in front of the machine myself. I’ve tested the files on my system without issue. (FCPX, Adobe, DaVinci, no Avid on my machine to test with unfortunately….)

Thanks for the suggestion to try linking instead of importing- will pass that along… though I believe they need to ‘import’ in order for the clips to show up on the network so the producers can screen the shots in their browsers at their desks…

The only difference between the footage I’ve shot for them up till this shoot, which has always imported perfectly fine, and this batch is that I’ve updated the firmware on the Odyssey recorder that I use in the field. The difference is that before the update the recorder would only capture 2 channels of audio. Now the files have 8 tracks of audio – even if there is only two active tracks coming from camera to the recorder.

Thanks for that. My workaround was to export using Compressor, making sure audio is 24bit/48khz, which still works without issue.

Tried a couple of the other flavours of prores today at the truck and audio was not working with anything I was exporting from FCPX 10.2
When I inspect the file the audio listed as 24bit/48khz….

I had to re-encode every file through Media Encoder in order for audio to playback on the KiPro.

Haven’t tried exporting with Compressor, or re-encoding the files with Compressor yet. Might try that later and see if there is the same issue with the latest Compressor version as well…

I let AJA support know yesterday, so they are aware.

That would be great – would love to know if it is just a local issue I’m having here, or a broader issue with the FCP update…

Everything today was 1080i60 48khz ProRes HQ. I’ll also try the other prores flavours and other frame sizes as well when I’m back in the truck tomorrow.

For now I’ll have to run all my exports through Media Encoder before loading onto the KiPro drive…

[gary adcock] “and the note says NOTHING about stereo audio

Yes, Jeremy mentioned he thought it may have to be dual mono, not stereo. Was simply saying that stereo works just fine..

All of my settings in FCPX are correct.

Since I updated today to 10.2 the Prores files I export from FCPX no longer play audio when playing out on a KiPro Rack..

The only thing that has changed in my workflow is updating FCPX.. sequence settings are exactly the same as before using 10.1.x. Yesterday I exported files from 10.1.x and they played perfectly fine on the same KiPro Rack.

I took the files I exported from FCPX that won’t play audio on the kipro, re-encoded them usind Media Encoder, and the resulting files played back no problem.

This leads me to believe the issue is with the FCPX update and how it is encoding to ProRes.
