i’ve been getting some avi files from an xp based
system and they don’t read on my system. i don’t
get an error, they just appear, both in the qtplayer
as well as in fcp as a white screen. the play cursor
moves but the screen remains white. don’t know about
audio as these are silent files. i believe all these
files are uncompressed, sometimes in somewhat unusual
    formats, like 1024×768.

could someone please point me toward a way of
troubleshooting this? i could request another format
but this looks like a limitation on my and apple’s
part so i’d rather just get it working as opposed to
calling attention to the limitation or my own ignorance.

might this be something to do with colorspace? if
the files are uncompressed, how would a codec be
    involved?

    thanks for any pointers,
    BabaG

You might not have the right codec associated to that avi file. Do you know what program created the avi files?

I’ve received Avid exported .mov files that required a D/L of special QT codecs before I could open/re-wrap to a FCP friendly format.

Have you tried to open in VLC Player? Usually, if I get a funky file that QT Player wont open, VLC will do the trick. mind you VLC player is just a player,, and wont convert the file into anything else for you.. but at least you might be able to get a look!

avi is just a wrapper, and FCP/Apple are just fine with thise files.
the problem is one of communication. when transferring files between individual computers, let alone operating systems and NLE’s, you have to agree on a compatablie codec that is and/or can be installed on each of the target machines.
talk to your colleagues and find out what codec they are currently using, it may be that you only need to download and install it on your Mac. if it is not a cross platform codec, then discuss with them a suitable cross platform codec for your workflow.

flip4mac didn’t do it. mpeg streamclip is able to
see the video and export it. would be nice to be
able to view clips without having to convert. still
looking for codec info for the export process. i
was under the impression that uncompressed didn’t
    require a codec, though.

I don’t know if this will help but I was experiencing the same thing on AVI files that I had previously been able to view and use.

I researched recent changes I had made to my system and found that a Free plug-in I had downloaded from Apple’s OS X downloads section was the problem’

I had downloaded “Perian 0.5” and once I removed it from my Quicktime plug-ins, the problem went away. It doesn’t seem to play nice with AVI.

    I hope this helps.

Perian is now up to 1.0. As previously stated, AVI is a container and any number of things can be inside there. One might try DivX or 3ivx plugin also. Flip4Mac does play certain things inside AVI and Quicktime itself can in some cases.

Keep in mind that many of these 3rd party plugins can conflict so it’s best to try them one at a time, creating a “Quicktime Removed” folder to keep the ones you’re not using, handy.

One thing VLC is good for is using its information command to find out exactly whats on the inside of that AVI so you can use the right plugin.

perian is and has been installed. don’t think it should make
any difference for this file, though, as the file is not
divx or xvid, both of which play fine on the system. the
file in question is uncompressed and is at an odd frame size
of 1024 x 682. the colorspace seems to be 24 bit rgb 888.

    thanks,

    update:

mpeg streamclip is able to read the file in its native rgb 888 format
at 1024 x 682. it cannot be output in the animation codec at that
ratio, however. to get the animation codec to successfully output
    i have to first letterbox the file so it’s 1024 x 768 (4 x 3).

would much rather not have to do this as it adds a lot of time in
duplicating the file and it’s not in its native aspect ratio.
would also rather export using ‘none’ rather than animation but
that’s not listed as an option in mpeg streamclip.

    any ideas anyone?
