    Well the reason is simply because there’s no Thunderbolt on the Mac Pro yet. When there is Thunderbolt for Mac Pro, be it in a form of a PCIe card or a new Mac Pro series, I would say the Ultrastudio 3D will work with it like the MBP and iMac.

    The answer is yes as it has been demonstrated at NAB 2011 and the recent Broadcast Asia 2011 with both MacBook Pro and iMac with Thunderbolt.

    In fact it can even do dual-SDI 3D monitoring as well with Resolve. There are HDMI output port to connect to a LCD TV and you should be able to output a side-by-side or full frame packed output from Resolve via HDMI to a 3D LCD TV.

  • Yes Resolve Mac works with DPX, as well as native RED, ARRI, Phantom formats.

    It can also read an AAF multi-track timeline from Avid in the upcoming version 8 release. You’ll need to get a Avid DNxHD option for Resolve Mac if you want to be able to both read and write to the Avid DNxHD format.

  • Resolve Mac works with Quicktime ProRes but the Resolve Linux doesn’t as there are no Quicktime ProRes encoder and decoder on the Linux OS to allow Resolve to read and write to that format.

    When Resolve Lite free version is out, you can use it to conform the Quicktime ProRes based project and then export out as DPX for Resolve Linux to grade.

    Hi John,

    The software features between the Mac and Linux version are identifical but there some differences, like on the Mac version, there are alot more Quicktime codecs supported as on the Linux platform it is very limited so if you have ProRes Quicktime clips, they will need to be converted to DPX first. If you plan to get the Resolve Control Surface grading panel as part of your upgrade, you’ll get the Resolve Mac version which you can use that as an assistant station to do these conversions. You can also use it to conform your project, injest video, render session…etc but you’ll need a shared storage for efficiencies and a database server so that both the Resolve Mac and Linux can share the projects.

    The other key differences is in the GPU processing as the Resolve Mac is limited to 3GPUs whereas on the Linux platform you can scale all the way to 16GPUs, depending on the kind of work you are doing.

  • I guess one way to work is to use Resolve itself to convert the ARRIRAW to Quicktime ProRes for offline editing and keep the filename to be the same. And then try to conform to the ARRIRAW in Resolve from the offline EDL.

    Hi Russell,

    Resolve has no limit like Apple Color when it comes to secondary CC as you can add as many nodes as you want per shot and each node can be a primary or secondary CC, a key or shape and you can route your image processing flow between the nodes.

    So to answer your question of having more than 10 vignettes per shot, you basically just add the number of nodes you need and each node will be a shape with its own softness.

    But as Robbie mentioned, if your grade exceeds what the GPU in your Resolve can handle, it’ll basically just playback at a slower frame rate. At this point you can either work in proxy-on-the-fly mode to get more real time performance or cache the clip to disk to get real time playback.
