You may be having playback issues. Are you doing a RAM preview to get a full rate playback or just hitting the space bar? Properly eased keyframes (like from hitting F9) should be nice and smooth. No need for expressions. If nothing else, just tweak your velocity curves to where you like them.

Use can use the ramp effect on a layer in AE. Set it to do the gradient you like. Then use this as an alpha track matte above the layer you want to effect. You may have to pre-comp the ramp layer.

Hey Jack, you may want to give the Color Stabilizer effect a try. It’s pretty self-explanatory:

I’m sure we could give much better resposes if you posted a sample frame from each scene you want fx for. Blood splatter can be done with particles. I’m sure you know that the sound fx will go a whole lot further than the fx will. If you over do the effect you can degrade the scare factor IMHO.

I assume they are now masks? If not you can copy/paste the strokes from Illustrator to AE and they will paste as masks. Once they are masks, just use the stroke effect. You can animate the start and end point. If you want a stroke that tapers and can be moved in 3D space with some 3D distortion capabilities then you can use Trapcode’s “3d stroke”. trapcode.com

Or just duplicate the layer a handful of times, set them all to different transfer modes and use an expression to control which ones have the full opacity while the other’s have zero.

How long is the shot? Can you post a sample frame of it?

Well you definitely need some fog and probably some particles in there as well. Add the light beams as if from the surface. You can also add some wavy transparent geometry and add a tiny touch of Angle of Incidence so you get some distortions here or there. Play with caustics.
