  • Smoothing out 1Hz luminance modulations (fixing a poor DIY telecine)

    Hi there,

A client of mine has just done a DIY transfer from standard-8mm to DV by pointing his DV camera at his 8mm projector’s screen! The image quality is surprisingly good EXCEPT that the luminance is modulated at a frequency of about 1Hz. I assume this is because the DV camera was running at 25fps whilst the film camera was going at 24fps so there’s a 1-second beat frequency. This luminance modulation is subtle enough to mean that the client (an ex-Physics researcher) didn’t notice the problem… but, still… it needs to be fixed.

Is there any way to smooth out these liminance oscillations? In other words, can I normalise luminance?

I have considered animating some levels keyframes but this sounds like a very painful procedure (there’s 40 minutes of footage).

Any ideas would be very helpful!

    Many thanks,
    Jack

Hey Jack, you may want to give the Color Stabilizer effect a try. It’s pretty self-explanatory:

    Effect>Adjust>Color Stabilizer

Thanks a lot for your replies. I’ll try the Color Stabilizer effect a go.

Dave: do you have a link to the thread from 2 weeks ago? It wouldn’t have been my client… he did the transfer a few days ago.

    Thanks,
    Jack
