Why are you doing the blending mode? Are you using ADD to put it over some other footage?
If so, first try using Screen instead and add a levels to the fire and bring the blacks to pure black.
Also download the ‘unmult’ plug-in. Do a search for it. It will create a matte from footage over black.

We bid on a project where people and the environment were going to have to be frozen over. The FX company decided the best way was tp paint the ice effect in and animate it appearing over time. So it’s basically down to paint skills ut onto layers.

Do a track of the image using the tracker. Apply the data to a null. Create a mask on a duplicate of the layer. Parent this layer to the null so the mask tracks with it. Then use the mask layer ontop of the original layer and set the orig layer’s track matte to alpha. Then animate the matte shape parameter to match however your mask shape needs to change.
