  • Tracking in AFX

I have some footage shot of a TV screen and I need to change whats on the TV. There are some camera moves in the footage. Is the best way to match the camera shot in AFX …. if so how do I do it. Or is it best to just track it by hand?

    Thanks in advance

I think it might be better to track in AE and adjust the motion by hand.If you want to ajdust it only by hand ,it could be a hard work.

I had to do a massive tracking project that was shot with a motion control rig, involving 5 vintage television, in which I had to replace dots with footage. I started out in AE (at the time, it was either 5.0 or 5.5), and soon discovered that it was not up to the task. I ended up doing the entire project in Combustion, but there was still a huge amount of single frame tweaking (hundreds of frames).

I hope for your sake that AE’s tracking capabilities have improved with version 6.0, so it’s not a total nightmare, but be aware that any tracking project is not going to hit the nail right on the head; there’s always a large amount of cleanup, mask tweaking, garbage masking, hand shifting of keyframes, and other headaches that make for lots of time. If you’re billing this out, I would add 25 to 50% to the number of hours just to protect yourself from the inevitable. Good luck with it. Contact me direct if you have any more questions. I’ve done a few of these projects, and at the end of the road was very happy with the results, but it was hugely tedious.

AFX 6.5 Pro has awesome tracking tricks up it sleeve.

Should be easy in Pro ?

They improved the tracker a bit in ver 6 but it is still incredibly subpar compared to other trackers like in Commotion. I still dig up Commotion which has been left for dead for years now to do a track. Hopefully with the buy outs that Adobe has been doing there will be much better roto/tracking in AE7.

And if not, in a matter of days I will probably end that script I talked about some time ago. Rotomasks ARE POSSIBLE with aescript, results have been fascinating so far and the script works but it needs lots and lots of polishing and cleaning.

If anyone wants to test the script (beta), please send me an email to my nickname @gmail.com

I am working on it, I’ll publish it here as soon as I can. If you want to take a look at it, throw me a mail as I said and I’ll send it to you!

Create trackers along the vector points for tracking, and after tracking, apply the whole mask to these vector points. So far, it has also some interpolation functions for a fullkeyframed masks that are helpful for corrections.
