tracking mask
hi. i have a footage layer and i need to do tracking to a mask on it. is there a way to do this not frame by frame?
im using AE6.5

Do a track of the image using the tracker. Apply the data to a null. Create a mask on a duplicate of the layer. Parent this layer to the null so the mask tracks with it. Then use the mask layer ontop of the original layer and set the orig layer’s track matte to alpha. Then animate the matte shape parameter to match however your mask shape needs to change.

If you use AE you should be familiar with a layer’s ‘track matte’. A track matte allows you to take either the luminance or the alpha info of another layer and apply it to the current layer. In AE this is done by putting the layer you are borrowing from directly above the one you are applying it to. On the bottom of the two layers next to your transfer mode menu there is the track matte menu. You can set it to luma or alpha. If there is a mask on the top layer it affects the alpha of that layer. If the layer below it has it’s track matte set to alpha it will steal that masked alpha from above.
