i have this illustrator artwork (drawn w/the pencil tool, so it’s about a 1pt line thickness) somewhat ornate that i want to animate in aftereffects. my first thought was to somehow create a mask of the art work, but b/c it’s in the pencil/pen tool and only a line i’m not sure if that’s the best way to approach this.

i’ve been playing with vector paint in ae but don’t want to have to redraw the entire illustrator artwork. is there anyway to import the lines from illustrator and be able to animate them?

Make sure your elements are on seperate layers. Also, a 1- point line will flicker when played back on video, so you may want to beef it up a little. There is a tutorial on the Cow about animating vectors and such, it’s quite detailed, and should help you plan your illustrator work and get it into ae.

I’m new to Illustrator and this part of AE…but couldn’t you select a path in Illustrator, then paste it into AE as position keyframes for your brush in vector paint? That, or perhaps take the indirect route and paste a path onto a solid in your comp to create a mask, then select the Mask Shape and paste that as brush position keyframes?

Sorry, that’s more of a question than an answer 🙂
