  • This is often the case for long time avid editors who spend a short time on Final Cut. They couldn’t figure out a way to do it “just like the avid” and they assume it’s not possible. But I don’t think you can really blame them, FCP has tons of shortcut keys and some of them are even listed in the menu or keyboard or button list.

The one “complaint” I hear and read over and over again is that FCP can not edit one sequence into another without nesting. And I don’t think it could back in the earlier versions but it’s possible since a couple versions ago I believe – CMD F9 or CMD F10 will insert or overwrite a sequence that is loaded in the viewer with discrete clips without nesting.

I think there needs to be a world wide FCP Q&A session for avid editors. Perhaps next NAB.

I like to think it’s not bias, just misinformation.

  • There is a size limit to the file in Cinema Tools. Check the manual to see what the size limit is. It sounds like reverse telecine within cinema tools is working. The file is probably too big. Advanced pulldown won’t work if it’s a standard 2:3 pulldown which according to your previous postings is probably what the post house did since they performed a tape a tape color correction.

But how do you add this command to the keyboard layout? Typing in Shift-CMD-` in the keyboard layout and button list does not reveal a command???

  • I read your old thread and you said you used “Conform.” Don’t use conform instead use “reverse telecine” under the clip menu. And then use “conform to 23.98” and then use the default selections – F1/F2, AA.

    See if this helps…

I would use an external firewire 800 drive for HDV storage.

Run OS X from an external USB drive? May be possible but I wouldn’t trust it.

Lose the USB external drive completely. With all due respect to Walter, an intel duo imac can certainly edit HDV. I have tested this configuration before. And since he’s only testing a few clips and not edit a 30 hr doc, it should perform fine.

Do yourself a favor, set your Easy Setup to the appropriate HDV setting. Then start a new sequence and edit your HDV clips into this new sequence and see id it works any better.

You said you have 1.5 gig of RAM. I believe having equal amount of ram (2×512 or 1x1gig sticks) gives the BEST performance.

    Try these tips and see.

Do you mean to say you have “Time of Day” or “Free Run” timecode on your tapes?

There is no way to change the pre-roll of how FCP creates a new clip. But you can change the pre-roll of your deck control to a shorter pre-roll but you don’t want too short of a pre-roll.

You may have to nudge your in points manually.

1)You cannot upgrade FCE from FCP.

2)You can trade in your 4.5 disks to Apple to upgrade to the Universal Binary version of Final Cut Studio for a mere $200. But obviously this will take a few weeks to a month for the shipping back and forth.

I would suggest asking a colleague for a copy of their FCP5. Or you can may try to search for a copy of FCP 5 upgrade from a CompUSA or a Microcenter. Often times, these stores may have upgrades from about 6 months ago which they’ve never sold.

Just checked out the AJA calc again. In addition to adding the total storage space, it will also show the data rate of each format. Awesome! Thanks!
