  • Move from FCP to FCE on new Quad G5 – Need Help!

Our old G4 gave up the ghost this last weekend. We were editing with FCP HD 4.5 (upgrade version from FCP 3.0), which we purchased about 7 months ago.

I went out this weekend and purchased a new G5 Quad. When I returned, I installed FCP HD 4.5 and a standalone copy of Motion2 that was purchased about 2 months ago.

Motion2 works just fine, but when trying to run FCP HD 4.5, I get an error message that states, “Configuration error: This software requires certain hardware or software which is missing: *Power Macintosh G4/350 megahertz (MHz), or faster. *AGP graphics card.”

After doing a bit of reading on Apple’s website, I see that FCP HD 4.5 is not supported on the G5 Quad. Therefore, I am faced with an upgrade. I really do not want to pay $699 for the upgrade to FCP Studio HD, when in reality, the only useful thing it gains me is access to FCP again.

I searched for a standalone version of an upgrade to FCP HD 5.0, but it is no where to be found on Apple’s website. They are promoting an upgrade available sometime next month for $199 to FCP Studio Universal. However, I cannot wait this long to edit our television program.

Therefore, I went out today to purchase a copy of Final Cut Express to use in the meantime. I bought the upgrade version, as the guy who sold it to me said it would install if I owned a copy of FCP. Well, it won’t. After entering the FCE serial number, it asks for a previous version’s serial number. Neither the FCP 4.5 or FCP 3.0 serial would work.

So, now I’m stuck. I have a copy of FCE that I cannot use. I have a copy of FCP HD 4.5 that I cannot use.

Question 1: Does anyone know a way to get the FCE upgrade to take with my existing FCP serial numbers?
Question 2: Is there another creative solution besides spending $699 for Studio, which contains mainly software that I already own (Motion2) or would not use?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

1)You cannot upgrade FCE from FCP.

2)You can trade in your 4.5 disks to Apple to upgrade to the Universal Binary version of Final Cut Studio for a mere $200. But obviously this will take a few weeks to a month for the shipping back and forth.

I would suggest asking a colleague for a copy of their FCP5. Or you can may try to search for a copy of FCP 5 upgrade from a CompUSA or a Microcenter. Often times, these stores may have upgrades from about 6 months ago which they’ve never sold.
