  • FCP 5 & TC Breaks in HDCAM downconverts

I’m working with DVCAM downconverts on from am an HDCAM source with multiple timecode breaks. The DVCAM dubs kept the original timecode which does not start over at the breaks, so they are usable (although less than ideal). FCP is set to kick out and make a new clip at every timecode break, which is great, but since I need to have a good list, I checked to make sure that I could batch capture these FCP created clips. When I tried this, the capture stops with the message, “timecode error, reached end of tape.” I’m thinking that this is because there isn’t enough pre-roll for recapturing these FCP auto created clips. Is there a way to set the appropriate pre-roll into the auto creation of clips in FCP 5? Of course, the ideal situation would be to not have TC breaks, but we’re on a tight deadline & budget so I hate to downconvert all the footage again.

    I’m working on a power mac 2.0 with 2.5 G of RAM.

Many thanks for any help with this!

Do you mean to say you have “Time of Day” or “Free Run” timecode on your tapes?

There is no way to change the pre-roll of how FCP creates a new clip. But you can change the pre-roll of your deck control to a shorter pre-roll but you don’t want too short of a pre-roll.

You may have to nudge your in points manually.

Thanks! Yes, I meant free run. I wish there were a better work around than changing the in/out-points manually. This would be pretty time consuming to do for every new clip. But I guess the thing to do is to double check FCP auto-made clips in the EDL before the online. We used an A & B cameras, hence “free run,” and no getting around the TC breaks.

    I appreciate the help.

I guess I’m not understanding what you’re trying to do. When it’s time to redigitize, why would you want to upres the ENTIRE clip? Wouldn’t you only need the 3 seconds used in the timeline and not the 20 minutes from the original clip? My point is, that these new “ins and outs” from the “used” portion of the clip should be nowhere near the last frame of the original clip. Therefore, the error you’re reporting would not be an issue.

If for some reason you just want to redig everything, then you may run into the problem.
