And the Avid Trim tool is much much better. Have a 4 up view during slip and slide is great. And it pops up when you’re dragging or using the keyboard. I find that FCP’s lack of preview window when you’re using the keyboard to slip and slide is a real detriment.

I agree and disagree with the previous comments here. Getting a college education is utterly important no matter what you study. You said your emphasis is on running a big post house then you should consider at least a minor in business with perhaps a major in film or television productions. I disagree with Graeme’s comment that most college level profs are failures in the real world. It depends on where you go to school, USC and NYC will have Spielberg, Spike Lee, James Schamus and other real world successful people teach classes as visiting professors. It depends where you end up.

I transfered into my film school at Boston University after studying one year of history. I think film/TV school lets you make all the bad films and get it out of your system. I think everyone goes thru the bad film period in their life. Most people from 18-21 want to make a comedy with Jesus (what would jesus do now, he’d be a pot smoking hippie film), their own horror movie, their own tarintino/john woo knock off, their own serious rape/incest/abuse drama. These are consistent themes I’ve seen in student film festivals. Most of them are bad but you know what? That’s ok! They’re supposed to be bad! You’re new to this, you’re practicing. And the best thing about film school is that you get 4 years (maybe less depending on requiremnts and such) to learn and practice and get the bad films out of your system before you get into the real world and spend your own hard earned money to make these bad films.

And after all, it’s college. You’ll have a great time in those four years regarding of what you study.

Good luck and let us know where you end up.

I see that the Kona 2 is not on the website anymore. Is the Kona Lhe the only HD option for PCI-X G5 users?

” This “pricing dilemna” is much like a real estate deal. Your house is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. So, you’ve done a few improvements, put on fresh paint, and spruced up the front yard.”

Adding an HD deck, monitor, and IO cards are substantial upgrades more like adding a new roof, building a new garage, a new bedroom and so on. So I’m believe it justifies the additionl cost.

I would charge the room rental more and the edit fee the same. After all, rental houses rent HD gear for more money than SD gear. And when a client is over, they’re renting your edit room as well as your editor. It would seem to me not unfair nor uninviting to have a higher room rental fee for HD to cover the higher cost of putting that room together. But your editors are “editing” either SD or HD, so I’d keep the fee the same.

Not to sound too flip about this. But your problems stem from your administrative purchasing procedures not from Apple. What if some institution needed a six months processing time, should Apple or any other manufacturers honor the long processing time? I don’t think so. I certainly understand your frustrations but that’s a drawback from your working environment not from Apple’s sales practice.

Yes some users will be left behind but that’s reality of the computing and software business.

“so adding one computer just cost the school and $2400!”

$2400 for six seats of one of the world’s leading PROFESSIONAL Post Production software is too much? I don’t share your outrage.

  • I agree that this lack of feature makes it somewhat cumbersome when you need to move a group of keyframes. But you can make some very complex effects inside FCP. It is a very powerful effects NLE – not After Effects powerful but much better than other NLE.

I would say learn to use the next keyframe and previous keyframe shortcut (shft-K, option-K) in conjucture with typing in the parameter value number.

It takes a little bit to get use to but once you are, it’s very flexible.
